Robert Pattinson Reportedly in Running for Lord Voldemort in HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series

HBO has already revealed a large portion of the cast for its upcoming Harry Potter series, but one of the franchise’s biggest roles remains a mystery.

The network has its new Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. Several major Hogwarts professors have also been cast, along with familiar names from the wider Wizarding World.

Yet fans are still waiting to learn who will eventually step into the role of Lord Voldemort.

That wait has sparked plenty of speculation online, and now a former Harry Potter actor has joined the conversation.

Robert Pattinson, who played Cedric Diggory more than two decades ago, is now being discussed as a possible candidate for HBO’s adult Voldemort.

One Former Star Is Back in the Conversation

Pattinson first joined the Wizarding World in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), where he portrayed Cedric Diggory.

His character became one of the most memorable parts of the fourth movie, but a potential return to the franchise would obviously look very different this time around.

Recent online reports, social media conversations, and fan speculation have connected Pattinson to the adult Voldemort role. HBO has not confirmed him for the part, and there has been no official announcement that he has signed on.

For now, Pattinson remains part of the larger casting conversation rather than the confirmed lineup.

Still, the idea has caught attention for an obvious reason.

Pattinson has come a long way since Cedric. In the years since leaving Harry Potter, he has taken on a wide range of roles, including Bruce Wayne in The Batman (2022).

That makes the possibility of him returning as Voldemort particularly interesting. HBO could bring back someone with a direct history in the franchise, casting him as a character completely different from the one fans remember.

Before that question gets answered, though, HBO already has a long list of major roles locked in.

The New Wizarding World Is Taking Shape

The three most important young characters have officially been cast.

Dominic McLaughlin will portray Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout has been selected as Ron Weasley.

HBO has also filled several major Hogwarts roles.

John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer takes over as Minerva McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu will portray Severus Snape, and Nick Frost has been cast as Rubeus Hagrid.

Luke Thallon will play Quirinus Quirrell, while Paul Whitehouse will portray Argus Filch.

The cast extends well beyond Hogwarts, too.

Katherine Parkinson will play Molly Weasley. Johnny Flynn has been cast as Lucius Malfoy, with Lox Pratt portraying Draco Malfoy. Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby will play Petunia and Vernon Dursley.

With so many major characters already in place, HBO has given fans a much clearer picture of its new version of the Wizarding World.

One recent casting announcement also brought the series closer to Voldemort himself.

Another Piece of the Puzzle Is Already Set

Billy Barratt has been cast as Tom Riddle for the portion of the story based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

That immediately raised questions about how HBO plans to handle Voldemort throughout the television adaptation.

Tom Riddle is the younger version of the wizard who eventually becomes Lord Voldemort. Still, Barratt’s casting does not necessarily mean he will portray the fully transformed version of the character later.

The original films used different actors to portray Voldemort at various points in his life so that HBO could take a similar approach.

That leaves the adult version of He Who Must Not Be Named as one of the largest remaining casting questions.

And Pattinson is the only name being discussed.

Several Big Names Have Entered the Rumor Mill

Ralph Fiennes, Cillian Murphy, Bill Skarsgård, and Paul Bettany have all appeared at various points in reports, rumors, online discussions, or fan casting for Voldemort.

Fiennes naturally stands out because he played Voldemort throughout much of the original film series.

Murphy has also been repeatedly connected to speculation around the role, while Skarsgård and Bettany have surfaced in the wider online conversation.

Pattinson brings a different angle.

He would not be returning to reprise Cedric Diggory. Instead, he would potentially come back more than 20 years later as the central villain of the entire story.

For now, though, HBO has not officially named its adult Voldemort.

One of HBO’s Biggest Reveals Is Still Coming

The new Harry Potter series already has a substantial cast, but Voldemort remains one of the most important roles still unannounced.

Pattinson would certainly make for a surprising choice.

His return would connect HBO’s new adaptation to the original films while placing him in a role completely unlike Cedric Diggory.

Until HBO makes an official announcement, however, Pattinson remains one of several names circulating for the role.

For now, the identity of the new Lord Voldemort remains hidden.
