End of an Era: One of America’s Oldest Theme Parks Has Ceased Operations Forever
Nearly 120 years of history came to a close this week, as Clementon Park and Splash World has confirmed it will not return for another season, marking the permanent shutdown of one of the country’s oldest amusement parks.
Tracing the Park’s Long History
Clementon Park and Splash World traces its roots back to 1907, when it opened its doors as Clementon Lake Park in Clementon, New Jersey. The park stands as one of just over a dozen remaining trolley parks operating in the United States, a rare distinction that reflects its deep ties to early 20th-century amusement park history.
After operating independently for decades, the park changed ownership in 2011 and was later put up for auction in 2021. IB Parks & Entertainment stepped in that year, reopening the park for its 2021 season and running it for five years before announcing its permanent closure on September 9, 2026.
Clementon Park’s Farewell Message
The park shared the news through a Facebook post on Wednesday, thanking its community while confirming the closure was effective immediately:
“As we close out our 2026 season, we want to sincerely thank our guests, Season Passholders, team members and community for being part of another summer at Clementon Park & Splash World.
After five memorable years, we are saddened to announce that we have made the difficult decision to close the park and plan to offer the park for sale.
It has been a privilege to care for a place that has meant so much to generations of families. We are hopeful that we will find a buyer who shares our love for Clementon Park and will carry its history and legacy forward.
Additional details regarding the sale will be shared as they become available.
Thank you for the memories, the support and five wonderful seasons. We are truly grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey.”
A Legacy Awaiting Its Next Chapter
The park’s official website expressed hope that a future owner could bring a “new chapter” to the 119-year-old destination and “carry the legacy forward.” Alongside a contact form for prospective buyers or guests with questions, park operators wrote:
“Five seasons. Countless memories and a future filled with possibility.
Clementon Park has brought generations together through summer days, first rides, big splashes and family traditions. We welcome serious inquiries from those who see the opportunity to build upon that legacy and shape what comes next.”
For now, Clementon Park and Splash World has no plans to reopen under new ownership in 2027.
