Disney Confirms 2027 Monsters Inc. Land Opening, but New Photos Show How Much Work Remains

Monstropolis is officially coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027, and guests won’t even have to wait for its biggest attraction to be completed before entering the new land.

Disney confirmed at D23 that most of the Monsters, Inc.-themed area will open first. The massive suspended door coaster will follow during a later phase.

It’s a major development for a project that will completely transform the former Muppets Courtyard.

But new aerial photos show why Disney fans shouldn’t get too far ahead of themselves.

There is still plenty of construction ahead before humans can officially enter Monstropolis.

Disney Is Splitting the Opening Into Two Phases

Disney could have waited for the Monsters, Inc. door coaster before opening the entire area. Instead, the company will get guests into the new land sooner.

Most of Monstropolis is scheduled to debut sometime in 2027.

The coaster comes later.

When finished, the attraction will carry guests into the famous door vault inside the Monsters, Inc. factory. Disney says it will be the company’s first suspended coaster and its first coaster featuring a vertical lift.

That project is enormous, and the massive show building already towers behind the rest of Monstropolis.

Construction Is Still Everywhere

Recent aerial photos from bioreconstruct reveal just how much work continues throughout the rest of the land.

The central courtyard remains filled with construction activity. Scaffolding surrounds several buildings, while equipment and materials remain scattered throughout the former Muppets area.

Crews are working beneath the future central fountain as well. Plumbing, trenches, and utilities remain exposed as Disney builds out the infrastructure needed for the finished courtyard.

Dark Avenue also remains under heavy construction.

Disney is dramatically changing the former façades with new rooflines, ledges, overhangs, arches, and other details designed to make the existing buildings look like they belong in Monstropolis.

Some recognizable pieces remain.

The former Muppet*Vision 3D theater is becoming The Glob, where guests will eventually see Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley & Mike.

Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano, meanwhile, will become Harryhausen’s.

Don’t Assume This Means Early 2027

Disney’s phased-opening announcement is great news because guests won’t have to wait for the door coaster before experiencing Monstropolis.

Still, there’s an important distinction.

Disney has confirmed Monstropolis will open in 2027. It hasn’t confirmed that it will open during the early part of 2027.

The newest construction photos make that distinction particularly important.

Disney still has significant exterior, infrastructure, pathway, and thematic work underway. Once heavy construction wraps up, crews will also need to prepare the land for daily operations and thousands of guests.

Disney has plenty of time to make that happen during its announced 2027 window.

For now, Monstropolis is officially arriving before its door coaster.

Whether that means spring, summer, fall, or even later in 2027 remains to be seen.
