Disney’s Florida Guests Warned: Deluxe Resort Area Slated for Multi-Month Closure in 2028

Planning a Disney vacation far in advance gives families plenty of time to prepare, but it also creates one potential headache. The resort experience available when you book isn’t always exactly what you’ll find when the trip finally arrives.

Some Disney travelers will run into that situation in 2028.

Disney has confirmed a months-long refurbishment that will temporarily remove several recreational amenities from one of its Florida resort destinations. The project starts shortly after the holiday season and stretches into spring.

Disney isn’t permanently removing these offerings. However, guests considering an early 2028 stay should pay close attention to the dates before locking in their plans.

Disney Vacations Aren’t Limited to the Theme Parks

When people think about higher-end Disney accommodations in Florida, Walt Disney World probably comes to mind first.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, and Disney’s Beach Club Resort are among the Deluxe Resort options around Walt Disney World.

These properties offer guests a variety of amenities and convenient access to Disney’s four theme parks.

However, Disney also offers a very different type of Florida vacation outside the Walt Disney World bubble.

Disney’s Vero Beach Resort sits along Florida’s Atlantic Coast, allowing guests to enjoy a Disney resort without spending their days moving between theme parks.

That difference becomes particularly important when recreational amenities aren’t available.

This Disney Getaway Has a Different Focus

Disney’s Vero Beach Resort sits roughly two hours southeast of Walt Disney World. The property belongs to Disney Vacation Club, although guests don’t have to be members to stay there.

The location creates an experience that’s quite different from a traditional Walt Disney World vacation.

Instead of planning mornings around Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or Disney’s Animal Kingdom, families can spend more time enjoying the beach and resort.

That also means swimming and other recreational activities can play a larger role in the trip.

Families might plan afternoons around the pool or give younger guests time to enjoy nearby recreational offerings. Without theme parks dominating the daily schedule, those amenities can become an important part of a Vero Beach vacation.

Several of them, however, won’t be available for part of 2028.

A Months-Long Closure Begins in January

Disney has confirmed that the resort pool will close for routine maintenance starting January 10, 2028.

The refurbishment will continue through April 2028, taking the pool out of operation for several months.

Guests will lose more than just swimming during that period.

The Tiger Lily Water Play Area will also become unavailable during the refurbishment. Port Holes Miniature Golf will also be unavailable.

Disney is additionally preparing visitors for the possibility of construction disruptions. Guests may see work in progress or hear construction noise in the affected area until crews complete the project.

At this point, Disney describes the work as routine maintenance. The company hasn’t presented the project as a permanent removal or reimagining of the recreational area.

Even so, having multiple activities unavailable simultaneously could make a noticeable difference.

Refurbishments Can Change a Resort Stay

The Vero Beach project also arrives as Disney continues renovation and construction work elsewhere across its resort portfolio.

Additional projects are expected to affect guests through 2027.

The impact of resort construction can vary considerably. Some guests may encounter construction walls or daytime noise, but will still have access to most amenities. Other projects can temporarily remove pools, restaurants, transportation, or recreational offerings.

Hotels can also continue to welcome guests while significant work is underway.

That’s why travelers booking far in advance may want to check refurbishment information again as their vacation approaches.

That becomes especially important at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, where guests may spend much more of their vacation at the property instead of leaving for a theme park each morning.

Early 2028 Trips Will Look Different

Disney has at least given guests plenty of time to prepare.

Anyone considering Disney’s Vero Beach Resort from January 10 through April 2028 should account for the closures before booking or finalizing a trip.

The resort itself will remain open, but the pool, Tiger Lily Water Play Area, and Port Holes Miniature Golf won’t be available during the refurbishment. Guests could also encounter construction activity and noise.

For travelers primarily interested in enjoying the beach and relaxing, those limitations may not derail a vacation. Families hoping to spend plenty of time swimming, using the children’s water area, or playing miniature golf may feel differently.

With the project announced well ahead of 2028, travelers can decide whether the experience still works for them or whether postponing their visit until after the refurbishment makes more sense.
