Water Transportation Returns to Disney’s Deluxe Resorts Amid Massive Multi-Year Overhaul

Guests staying along Walt Disney World’s Crescent Lake finally have a major perk restored to their daily park commute. After unexpected maintenance delays stretched a brief closure into a longer disruption, Disney has officially reopened the primary FriendShip Boat dock at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. The return of water transportation offers immediate relief to guests navigating the resort area, even as heavy exterior construction continues to transform both Disney’s Yacht Club and Disney’s Beach Club Resorts.

FriendShip Boat Dock Reopens After Unexpected Delay

Location is everything when booking a stay at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts. One of the highest-rated amenities at these sister Deluxe resorts is direct water transportation via the FriendShip Boats, which ferry guests across Crescent Lake to EPCOT’s International Gateway and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

That key convenience was temporarily disrupted when the Yacht Club’s FriendShip dock closed for scheduled refurbishment. Originally slated to shut down for just five days—from August 17 through August 21—the maintenance project ran into unforeseen delays, keeping the dock out of service longer than anticipated. During the extended closure, temporary green fencing blocked access to the pier, forcing guests to take longer walking paths to EPCOT or rely on buses to reach Hollywood Studios.

The delay allowed crews to overhaul the dock’s structural foundation and replace aging planking. Workers systematically stripped away worn timber and installed fresh wood decking along the entire stretch of the pier. With construction barricades now officially removed, the FriendShip Boats have resumed their full loop around Crescent Lake, once again connecting the Yacht & Beach Club Resorts, Disney’s BoardWalk Resort, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin, EPCOT, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Major Construction Milestones at Yacht & Beach Club

The reopening of the FriendShip dock is just one piece of a much larger puzzle currently unfolding along the shores of Crescent Lake. Walt Disney World is actively executing a massive, multi-year exterior refurbishment project across both Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Disney’s Beach Club Resort.

Despite the ongoing scaffolding and construction crews, Disney has made significant progress on this long-term makeover. The project is being managed in distinct phases to minimize the operational footprint across the sprawling resort complex.

  • Disney’s Yacht Club Resort: Construction crews have made rapid progress on the Yacht Club side of the property. Exterior maintenance, power washing, and facade painting are currently scheduled to wrap up in late 2026. Guests can already see completed sections on the far side of the resort near the Swan and Dolphin, where refreshed siding and clean trim offer a preview of the finished product.
  • Disney’s Beach Club Resort: As work concludes at the Yacht Club, the primary focus of the exterior maintenance will shift to the Beach Club side. Construction activity on the Beach Club’s exterior is expected to continue through late 2027.
  • Disney’s Beach Club Villas Lobby: Beyond the exterior facades, interior refurbishments are progressing. From now through mid-September 2026, the lobby at Disney’s Beach Club Villas is undergoing phased maintenance. Portions of the space are temporarily blocked off, though guest access to villa accommodations remains open.

Navigating Construction During Your Stay

For travelers holding reservations at either resort through 2026 and 2027, staying informed about the project’s scope is essential for setting expectations. Disney’s official guest advisories note that construction activity occurs daily, typically between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The most notable guest impact involves room balconies. As crews move scaffolding along the exterior facades to repair and repaint the building, balconies attached to those specific room blocks are temporarily closed and locked for safety.

If having an accessible balcony is a priority for your vacation, keep in mind that front desk Cast Members can often assist with room reassignments. Because the construction moves in localized sections, moving away from active work zones is often possible, depending on resort occupancy.

While multi-year resort refurbishments inevitably bring localized disruptions, the reopening of the Yacht Club FriendShip dock is a welcome step forward for resort guests. With smooth water transport restored and exterior progress moving rapidly, Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts are well on their way to completing a much-needed transformation.
