Halloween Horror Nights is supposed to be scary. For many fans, that’s the entire point. But Universal Orlando Resort is once again giving guests a way to ask scareactors to back off — at least in certain parts of the event.
Just days before Halloween Horror Nights 2026 begins at Universal Studios Florida on August 28, the “Deathly Afraid” necklace has returned.
The $20 light-up accessory was introduced last year and gives guests a way to signal that they would prefer fewer direct scares while navigating the event.
Universal’s $20 Necklace Is Back
Guests wearing the “Deathly Afraid” necklace can use it in common areas, including the scare zones that transform Universal Studios Florida during Halloween Horror Nights.
When activated, the necklace signals that the guest doesn’t want to be directly targeted for scares.
This year’s version features a black strap with red stars and Halloween Horror Nights branding. The light-up portion includes the words “Never Go Alone 35th Anniversary” and glows red when activated.
Guests can purchase the necklace for $20 at Five & Dime or the Halloween Horror Nights Tribute Store.
But that $20 doesn’t buy complete protection from scares.
The Necklace Doesn’t Work Everywhere
Universal makes it clear that the necklace doesn’t guarantee a scare-free experience.
Most importantly, guests can’t activate it inside any of the haunted houses. Anyone entering a house should expect the full Halloween Horror Nights experience regardless of whether they purchased the necklace.
Instead, the accessory is intended for common areas where scareactors may approach guests unexpectedly.
That limitation keeps the event’s main attractions intact while giving some visitors more control over their experience between houses.
It’s also part of what has made the necklace such a debated addition. Some longtime fans view unexpected scareactor interactions as an essential piece of Halloween Horror Nights, while others appreciate having an option that makes the event more approachable.
Halloween Horror Nights Begins August 28
The necklace returns as Universal prepares for a huge year at Halloween Horror Nights.
Ten haunted houses are coming to the 2026 event. Stranger Things 5, Hellraiser, Sinners, Evil Dead Burn, and Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness make up the intellectual property lineup.
Original houses include Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control, H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: A Halloween Fright-Tacular!, Madlands: Caged Cannibals, Cybergoria, and Invasion: Alien Abduction.
Halloween Horror Nights 35 runs on select nights from August 28 through November 1.
For guests who want the houses and Halloween atmosphere without quite as many surprise encounters in the streets, the controversial $20 option is officially back.
