Marvel Officially Retcons the Punisher in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ (2026)
The Punisher has been one of Marvel’s most recognizable antiheroes for decades, and Jon Bernthal has firmly made the character his own in the MCU.
But Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) takes Frank Castle in a noticeably different direction.
Bernthal returns alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, bringing the two street-level heroes together in New York City. Yet despite Frank playing a significant role in the story, Marvel removes a familiar piece of his identity.
Nobody actually calls him the Punisher.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Changes Frank Castle
As first pointed out by The Direct, Marvel consistently refers to Bernthal’s character as Frank throughout Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026).
Peter Parker follows the same approach.
It’s an interesting decision considering how much importance previous MCU stories placed on the Punisher identity. Daredevil: Born Again and Punisher: One Last Kill leaned into the reputation Frank developed through his violent approach to crime.
In Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), that reputation has changed.
Frank certainly hasn’t become a traditional hero. He remains willing to kill his enemies, something that repeatedly puts him in conflict with Spider-Man.
However, Marvel shows that New York no longer views him entirely as a dangerous criminal.
Spider-Man Changes His Relationship With Frank
Peter finds himself alone following Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), with the world no longer remembering Peter Parker.
That leaves him focused heavily on being Spider-Man and protecting New York.
Frank ultimately becomes an unlikely partner.
Their relationship reaches a critical point during their pursuit of Jean Grey. Peter learns that Jean isn’t simply a villain and discovers her motivation involves revenge for her sister’s death.
Frank doesn’t know that when he fires at Jean.
Peter jumps into the bullet’s path, leaving Frank horrified by what he has done. Rather than continuing his attack, Frank rushes Peter to the hospital and stays nearby while doctors stabilize him.
The hospital sequence then pushes Frank’s transformation even further.
Marvel Gives the Punisher a New Reputation
Frank previously went on a hospital rampage during Daredevil Season 2. This time, hospital employees and law enforcement don’t treat his presence as an immediate threat.
They recognize that he wants to help Spider-Man.
Frank even receives enough freedom to pose as Spider-Man while Peter escapes from the hospital and disappears into the crowd outside.
It’s another sign that Marvel has changed Frank’s place within New York.
The feared vigilante is becoming someone the public can accept, even if his methods remain far more extreme than Spider-Man’s.
Has Marvel Abandoned the Punisher Name?
For now, Marvel hasn’t confirmed that the Punisher codename is permanently gone.
Still, completely avoiding it throughout Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) feels significant after previous MCU appearances spent so much time establishing that identity.
There’s also no follow-up to Punisher: One Last Kill currently in development. Another season of Daredevil: Born Againis coming, potentially providing another opportunity for Frank to return.
Marvel could also bring him back alongside Spider-Man after establishing their volatile partnership.
Either way, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) gives Frank Castle a different place in the MCU.
He still has the Punisher’s violent instincts and uncompromising approach. But Marvel no longer seems interested in having everyone around him define him by that name.
For the first time in a while, Frank Castle is simply Frank.
