Disney Holds Back Post-2027 ‘Star Wars’ Slate After ‘Mandalorian’ Box Office Misstep

A quiet gap has started drawing attention to Lucasfilm’s release calendar. The Star Wars franchise still has several major movies and Disney+ series lined up through 2027, but beyond that point, Disney has yet to reveal what comes next.

That lack of announcements has prompted fresh conversations about whether the company is taking more time before committing to another wave of theatrical releases. Following the box-office performance of The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), some believe Disney may be waiting to see how its next projects perform before unveiling a longer-term roadmap.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Fell Short of Expectations

When Lucasfilm announced that Din Djarin and Grogu would leave Disney+ for the big screen, expectations climbed quickly. The original series became one of the streaming service’s biggest early successes, making a theatrical movie seem like a natural next step.

The final box office results told a different story.

Produced for a reported budget of around $165 million, The Mandalorian and Grogu finished its worldwide run with approximately $345 million. That total allowed the film to recover its reported production budget before marketing and distribution costs, but Disney later acknowledged that the movie fell short of expectations.

The performance also left it as the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film released in theaters. While Disney has continued to express confidence in the franchise, the results have inevitably raised questions about how quickly the company plans to expand its theatrical lineup over the next several years.

Star Wars Still Has a Busy 2027 Ahead

Even with questions about the future, Lucasfilm’s schedule through 2027 remains packed with several major projects.

The next theatrical release is Star Wars: Starfighter, which arrives on May 28, 2027. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film stars Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, and Matt Smith in a standalone adventure that will mark the franchise’s return to theaters.

Another highly anticipated project is Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s untitled Rey movie. Daisy Ridley is set to reprise her role as Rey as she works to rebuild the Jedi Order. Although Lucasfilm has not announced an official release date, many industry reports continue pointing toward a late-2027 debut.

Disney+ also has major releases expected that year. Ahsoka Season 2 is expected to continue the fight against Grand Admiral Thrawn during the New Republic era, while Maul: Shadow Lord Season 2 is expected to explore further Darth Maul’s criminal empire and the darker side of the Force.

The Calendar Suddenly Opens Up

After those projects, however, the picture becomes much less clear.

Star Wars has traditionally mapped out films years ahead of release, often giving fans an extended look at where the franchise was headed. Right now, that isn’t the case. Disney and Lucasfilm have not officially announced any theatrical or streaming release schedule beyond 2027.

That doesn’t mean development has stopped. Lucasfilm has confirmed that multiple Star Wars films remain in development. Even so, the lack of confirmed dates or major announcements has become difficult to ignore.

One possible explanation is that Disney wants to evaluate the performance of Star Wars: Starfighter before making additional theatrical commitments. If the studio believes audience demand is still growing, it could move more aggressively with future films. If not, Lucasfilm may continue taking a more selective approach while relying on Disney+ to keep the franchise active.

At this point, that remains speculation. Still, the unusually quiet release calendar has become a topic of discussion among Star Wars fans.

Several Major Projects Are Still in Development

Although nothing has officially been scheduled beyond 2027, Lucasfilm still has several high-profile projects moving through development.

Dave Filoni’s New Republic movie remains one of the biggest. The film is expected to bring together storylines from The Mandalorian and Ahsoka in a crossover theatrical event.

The Rey movie also remains a possibility for 2028 if its current timeline changes. While many reports continue to point to late 2027, no official release date has been announced.

Lucasfilm is also reportedly developing a new trilogy from Simon Kinberg. However, the studio has shared very few details about the films or how they may connect to the existing saga.

Outside of film and television, the long-awaited Knights of the Old Republic remake remains in development. A Saber Interactive executive recently suggested 2028 could be a possible target, although no official launch window has been confirmed.

Waiting for the Next Announcement

Disney’s commitment to Star Wars has not changed, but its long-term release schedule is noticeably less defined than it once was. Between Star Wars: Starfighter, Rey’s return, and multiple Disney+ series, the franchise has plenty to keep fans busy through 2027.

What happens after that remains the biggest unanswered question.

Whether Disney is deliberately slowing its theatrical plans or simply choosing the right moment to announce its next slate, the company appears focused on its existing lineup before revealing what comes next for the Star Wars galaxy.
