‘Star Wars’ Officially Recasts Han Solo in New Release, Replaces Harrison Ford After 49 Years

For nearly half a century, Harrison Ford and Han Solo have been almost impossible to separate. Ever since the original Star Wars film hit theaters, Ford’s portrayal has defined the quick-witted smuggler for millions of fans worldwide. That’s why Lucasfilm’s newest casting announcement has sparked so much curiosity.

The studio has officially selected another actor to take on Han Solo, marking the first time in 49 years that a new performer has stepped into the role for an official Star Wars project. While that headline may sound like the start of a brand-new film or Disney+ series, the real story is much different—and it’s one longtime fans probably didn’t see coming.

The Legacy Harrison Ford Created

When Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) introduced audiences to Han Solo, Harrison Ford helped transform the character into one of the biggest names in science fiction. His mix of confidence, sarcasm, and unexpected heroism made Han an instant favorite, and Ford continued to play the role for multiple decades.

He returned in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) before reprising Han Solo during Disney’s sequel trilogy. His final appearance came in The Rise of Skywalker (2019), bringing an emotional close to one of the franchise’s most memorable performances.

Nearly five decades after Han first appeared on screen, Lucasfilm has officially cast another actor to portray the beloved character. Rather than launching a new chapter in the timeline, though, the studio is revisiting one of the stories that started it all.

The Surprise Behind the Casting

Welsh television network S4C recently revealed that a Welsh-language version of Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, will debut on Christmas Day 2026. Instead of simply translating subtitles, the production features a completely new voice cast recorded specifically for Welsh-speaking audiences.

Matthew Rhys will provide the voice of Han Solo, officially making him the newest actor to take on the legendary role in a Lucasfilm production. Best known for his work in Widow’s Bay, Rhys now joins one of entertainment’s most recognizable franchises.

Naturally, fans will wonder how closely his performance reflects Harrison Ford’s original delivery. Every actor who has portrayed Han Solo has faced comparisons to Ford, and Rhys will be no exception. Even so, this announcement represents a unique milestone in the character’s long history.

Harrison Ford Hasn’t Been the Only Han Solo

This isn’t the first time Lucasfilm has entrusted the famous smuggler to someone else.

In Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), Alden Ehrenreich portrayed a younger Han Solo years before the character crossed paths with Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Accepting that role meant following one of the most recognizable performances in movie history, a challenge few actors would envy.

The production itself also faced major obstacles. A highly publicized director change during filming forced the project in a different direction, creating complications long before audiences ever saw the finished movie.

When Solo reached theaters, it earned about $392.9 million worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing live-action theatrical release in the Star Wars franchise at the time. Even so, many viewers felt Ehrenreich’s performance wasn’t the movie’s biggest issue. Although his portrayal earned praise from many fans, Lucasfilm ultimately moved away from expanding on that version of Han Solo.

Now Matthew Rhys gets his own opportunity to leave a mark on the character, even if the circumstances differ greatly from Ehrenreich’s live-action debut.

Could Han Solo Return Again?

While Rhys is taking on Han Solo for this Welsh-language release, many fans continue wondering whether Harrison Ford could someday return to the galaxy far, far away.

Lucasfilm has increasingly relied on modern filmmaking technology to reconnect audiences with classic characters. Hayden Christensen, for example, returned as Anakin Skywalker in both Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) and Ahsoka (2023), allowing the franchise to revisit an earlier era of the character’s story.

That naturally raises questions about Han Solo’s future. Modern visual effects have made similar returns possible, and Ford could theoretically reprise the role if the right project were to emerge.

At the moment, however, that’s only speculation. Lucasfilm has not announced any plans for Ford to return as Han Solo, and neither the studio nor the actor has discussed such a project publicly.

Another Chapter in Han Solo’s Story

Few movie characters remain so closely connected to one performer as Han Solo does to Harrison Ford. Even so, official Star Wars productions occasionally call for new actors to step into familiar roles.

Matthew Rhys now becomes part of that history by voicing Han Solo in Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd. Whether this remains a unique one-off project or eventually leads to more official Han Solo performances from other actors remains unknown. For now, though, Lucasfilm has officially added another name to one of the franchise’s most iconic roles.
