Disney may be preparing to revive a major theme park project.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge currently exists at Disneyland Park in California and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. Both lands recreate Black Spire Outpost on Batuu and feature Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.
The franchise also appears elsewhere in Disney’s parks. Star Tours – The Adventures Continue operates at four resorts, while Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland both have versions of Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain.
Disneyland Paris was previously promised a larger Star Wars expansion, but those plans quietly disappeared. New rumors now suggest Disney could try again by transforming part of Discoveryland at Disneyland Park.
The plans remain unconfirmed. However, several reports point to new rides, major attraction changes, and a possible third version of Galaxy’s Edge.
Disney Could Revive Its Abandoned Paris Plans
Disney first announced a Star Wars area for Disneyland Paris in February 2018. It was part of a €2 billion expansion of Walt Disney Studios Park, which has since been renamed Disney Adventure World.
The expansion was set to add Marvel, Frozen, and Star Wars lands around a central lake now known as Adventure Bay. Disney released concept art but never explained what the Star Wars area would include.
References to Star Wars later vanished from updated artwork. Disney did not issue a separate cancellation announcement, but the project appeared to have been dropped.
In August 2024, Disney confirmed that a Lion King land would be built in its place. The area will include shops, restaurants, character encounters, and a new attraction beneath Pride Rock.
The latest rumors place the Star Wars project in a different park. Disney may now transform part of Discoveryland, which is already home to Star Tours and Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain.
Autopia is one of the attractions most often mentioned for removal. The outdoor driving ride occupies a large section of land beside Space Mountain.
Similar attractions have already closed at Hong Kong Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland. Disneyland’s version in California has also faced rumors of either a major update or permanent closure.
Autopia presents several problems. The ride has traditionally relied on sponsorship, and finding a new partner may be difficult.
Disney would also need to spend heavily to convert the vehicle fleet to electric power. Demand for the ride can also fall during wet or cold weather, which is common at Disneyland Paris (although this summer has brought several heatwaves).
The leading rumor is that Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance could replace it. The large trackless dark ride places guests inside a battle between the Resistance and the First Order.
The attraction combines several ride systems, detailed sets, live cast members, and multiple preshow scenes. It is already one of the main attractions at both existing Galaxy’s Edge lands.
Several Discoveryland Attractions May Change
Disney may also be considering a Star Wars retheme for Les Mystères du Nautilus. The walkthrough attraction opened in 1994 and lets guests explore Captain Nemo’s submarine from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
The attraction includes several recreated rooms and an encounter with a giant squid. Replacing it would likely divide fans.
Les Mystères du Nautilus is closely tied to Discoveryland’s original Jules Verne theme. Removing it would erase another part of the land’s original identity.
Space Mountain may receive a very different update. Rumors suggest Disney could remove the Hyperspace Mountain theme and restore the roller coaster’s original Jules Verne-inspired design.
The ride first opened as Space Mountain: De la Terre à la Lune. Its theme was based on Jules Verne’s novel From the Earth to the Moon.
Restoring that version would preserve part of the original Discoveryland while allowing Disney to add more Star Wars attractions elsewhere.
Orbitron may also receive a new theme. The future of Discoveryland Theatre, which currently houses Mickey’s PhilharMagic, is reportedly less certain.
Disney could keep the theater, give it a Star Wars production, or replace it with something new. This suggests the proposed land may still be in development.
Rumors have also pointed to a Mandalorian and Grogu roller coaster behind Space Mountain. Reports about the attraction have circulated for several years, although Disney has never confirmed it.
The idea may now face questions following the performance of the Mandalorian film. The Pedro Pascal-led release earned $345 million worldwide, which may affect Disney’s plans for a ride based on the characters.
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is another attraction reportedly under consideration. It could be built in the backstage area behind Discoveryland.
It is unclear whether the Paris ride would copy the versions in California and Florida. Disney could use the recent Mandalorian update or create a new mission for Disneyland Paris.
Disney must also decide whether the project would officially become another Galaxy’s Edge. It could recreate Black Spire Outpost on Batuu or operate as a smaller Star Wars section within Discoveryland.
The second option would be similar to Stark Expo at Hong Kong Disneyland. That area adds Marvel attractions to Tomorrowland without replacing the entire land.
A Paris version could also mix several Star Wars eras. Galaxy’s Edge originally focused only on the sequel trilogy and characters, including Rey and Kylo Ren.
Disneyland changed that approach in April 2026 by adding Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo. Those characters now appear alongside newer figures from the franchise.
That change could give Disneyland Paris more freedom. A new land could feature different generations of characters and locations already seen in the films.
Possible settings could include Tatooine, Coruscant, Jakku, or another recognizable planet. This would help the project feel different from the existing Galaxy’s Edge lands.
For now, Disney has not confirmed any of the rumored changes. Autopia remains open, and no new Star Wars attractions have been announced for Discoveryland.
More details could emerge at D23 in Anaheim, California, which takes place from August 14 to 16. The Disney parks presentation is scheduled for August 15 at 7 p.m. PDT and will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.
