Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain theme park has confirmed that one of its most historically significant attractions is temporarily out of service. Guests visiting the Tennessee vacation destination before Friday will have to do without the Dollywood Express.
The Official Closure Notice
Dollywood posted the update to its official Instagram story on Monday. The notice read:
“PARK UPDATE
The Dollywood Express will be closed for maintenance and is currently scheduled to return to service on Friday, August 7.”
The closure appears to have come without advance notice to guests — the kind of sudden maintenance shutdown that has become increasingly common for the steam train attraction in recent years. If the August 7 timeline holds, the disruption will last through Thursday, with the Dollywood Express expected back in service for the weekend.
More Than Just a Theme Park Ride
The Dollywood Express isn’t simply another attraction — it’s a piece of living history that predates Dolly Parton’s involvement with the park entirely. The steam train’s roots stretch back to the property’s earliest days as the Rebel Railroad, and the ride survived multiple ownership transitions and name changes before Parton took over in 1986 and transformed it into the beloved destination it is today.
That history, however, has also meant decades of wear. The Dollywood Express has required repeated extended maintenance closures over the past several years as the aging attraction continues to demand upkeep. Dollywood attempted to get ahead of the problem earlier in 2026 by converting the steam train from coal to oil — a change designed to reduce emissions and make maintenance more manageable from now on. Monday’s closure suggests the work isn’t finished yet.
The shutdown arrives at a natural transition point in the park’s schedule. The annual Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration presented by Food City has just concluded, and the Harvest Festival & Great Pumpkin LumiNights is waiting in the wings, set to open on September 14. Smoky Mountain Christmas follows on November 6 and runs through the close of the 2026 operating season on January 3, 2027.
