Disney’s Live-Action ‘Tangled’ Will Not End Like the Animated Film
Disney is rebuilding the kingdom of Corona for the live-action Tangled (2010) remake – but it won’t be totally identical to the original.
The studio’s live-action Tangled remake is currently filming in Girona, Spain, where medieval streets and colorful historic buildings are standing in for Rapunzel’s fictional homeland.
Disney first confirmed the project in December 2024, adding another animated favorite to its expanding collection of live-action adaptations.
Teagan Croft will lead the film as Rapunzel, the long-haired lost princess raised in isolation by Mother Gothel. Milo Manheim will appear opposite her as Flynn Rider – the alias of Eugene Fitzherbert, a wanted thief who unexpectedly becomes her guide beyond the tower.
Kathryn Hahn has been cast as Mother Gothel, while Caitriona Balfe will portray Rapunzel’s mother, the Queen of Corona. Diego Luna has also joined the live-action Tangled cast in an undisclosed role.
Michael Gracey, whose credits include The Greatest Showman (2017), is directing the Disney remake.
Filming Reveals Disney’s New Kingdom of Corona
Unlike productions filmed almost entirely on closed soundstages, the new Tangled movie has completed several scenes in public areas.
That has given fans an unusually detailed look at Disney’s approach to Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Corona, and several recognizable sequences from the 2010 animated film.
One video shared from the production showed children from Corona braiding Rapunzel’s famously long golden hair.

Other footage has apparently captured Flynn stealing the missing princess’s crown, along with scenes involving Rapunzel’s return to the kingdom after escaping Mother Gothel.
Although Disney appears to be following the broad outline of the animated Tangled, the production is not recreating every sequence exactly.
The clearest difference so far appears during Rapunzel’s reunion with the King and Queen of Corona near the end of the story.

In Disney’s animated film, Rapunzel returns to the palace after Mother Gothel is defeated. Her parents embrace her, and Flynn Rider is eventually pulled into the emotional family reunion.
The live-action remake seems to handle the moment differently.
Footage from the Girona set appears to show Rapunzel approaching her parents before deliberately introducing Flynn to them.
Instead of Flynn simply becoming part of the royal embrace, Rapunzel seemingly brings him into the conversation herself.
It is a modest alteration rather than a complete rewrite, but it means Disney’s live-action Tangled will not end exactly like the animated movie.
Rapunzel’s Story Receives Several Small Updates
The adjusted reunion is not the only apparent change discovered during filming.
Set images suggest Disney has replaced some of Corona’s familiar royal-purple details with blue decorations. Although the alteration is largely cosmetic, it has already attracted criticism from fans protective of the animated film’s visual identity.
Rapunzel’s short brown hairstyle may also differ slightly after Flynn cuts her magical golden hair during the confrontation with Mother Gothel.
Her signature purple dress, however, remains close to the costume worn by the animated Rapunzel. Flynn Rider’s clothing also appears strongly influenced by his original vest, boots, trousers, and satchel.

These choices suggest Disney is attempting to balance recognizable Tangled imagery with smaller revisions to the characters and story.
The studio has faced criticism for taking both approaches in previous live-action remakes.
Mulan (2020) removed Mushu, Li Shang, and the animated film’s musical format. Snow White (2025) substantially revised its central romance and used computer-generated characters for the Seven Dwarfs.
Other Disney adaptations have remained far closer to their source material.
The Lion King (2019) reproduced much of the 1994 film’s story and dialogue, while Beauty and the Beast (2017) retained most of the animated musical’s major scenes and songs.
Disney has also expanded the roles of its princesses during the live-action remake era.
Jasmine received greater political ambitions in Aladdin (2019), while Belle was presented as an inventor in Beauty and the Beast.
Rapunzel introducing Flynn to her parents may serve a similar purpose, giving her greater control over one of the final decisions in her story.
The change does not dramatically alter Flynn Rider’s fate, Mother Gothel’s defeat, or Rapunzel’s reunion with the King and Queen. Instead, it adjusts how the characters arrive at the animated film’s familiar conclusion.

With filming continuing in Spain, more differences may emerge before Disney releases its live-action Tangled reboot.
