The clock is ticking for Disney’s 999 happy haunts.
Haunted Mansion has remained a Disney parks staple for decades, carrying guests through creaking corridors, a séance led by Madame Leota, a crowded ballroom, and a graveyard where the dead appear considerably more cheerful than the living.
The attraction’s appeal comes partly from its balance of darkness and comedy. Doom Buggies move through eerie scenes filled with rattling coffins, floating instruments, disappearing ghosts, and the infamous hitchhiking trio waiting to follow guests home.
That familiar experience is about to vanish from two Disney parks within the same week. Disneyland’s original Haunted Mansion and Tokyo Disneyland’s Gothic interpretation are both preparing to close for their annual seasonal transformations.
Guests in Tokyo have until August 3, 2026, to ride the traditional attraction. Disneyland visitors have through August 7 before the Anaheim mansion closes four days later.
Disneyland’s Original Mansion Will Disappear Until 2027
Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion will close on August 8, beginning a 13-day conversion inside the New Orleans Square attraction.
The mansion will reopen on August 21 as Haunted Mansion Holiday, coinciding with the first day of Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort. The overlay brings Jack Skellington, Sally, Oogie Boogie, and other characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas into the ride.
Although the physical closure is relatively short, the original version will likely remain unavailable for months.
Disney has not announced when Haunted Mansion Holiday will end in 2027. However, the overlay traditionally continues through the resort’s Christmas season, which will run from November 13, 2026, through January 6, 2027.
That schedule means guests visiting between late August and the beginning of January should expect the seasonal attraction rather than the standard Haunted Mansion.
Haunted Mansion Holiday changes several of the ride’s best-known scenes. Jack Skellington takes over the mansion, Madame Leota delivers festive incantations, and Oogie Boogie greets guests near the attraction’s conclusion.
The ballroom also receives a new gingerbread house every year. Disney creates a different design for each season, often incorporating characters, moving parts, and elaborate decorations made from gingerbread, icing, and other confectionery materials.
The overlay has become a major Disneyland tradition, but its lengthy run continues to divide fans. Some visitors plan trips specifically to experience the holiday version, while others dislike losing the original attraction for a significant portion of the year.
Disneyland’s mansion has also received several permanent updates in recent years. Disney expanded the outdoor queue, introduced improved accessible routes, added new details throughout the grounds, and opened the Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond shop near the attraction.
Those additions have made Haunted Mansion closures a sensitive subject among longtime fans. Disney’s published schedule, however, identifies the August shutdown as the usual holiday conversion, with no major permanent interior changes currently announced.
Tokyo’s Haunted Mansion Faces a Longer Initial Closure
Tokyo Disneyland will begin its own seasonal work first.
The Fantasyland attraction closes on August 4 and will remain unavailable through September 14. Its six-week shutdown is considerably longer than the installation period required at Disneyland in California.
Tokyo’s mansion will reopen on September 15 as Haunted Mansion “Holiday Nightmare.” The seasonal attraction will then continue operating through January 7, 2027.
A second closure is already scheduled from January 8 through February 4, 2027. That refurbishment will allow Tokyo Disney Resort to remove the holiday overlay and return the attraction to its traditional form.
Tokyo Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion shares many scenes with the original California ride, but the buildings look dramatically different.
Disneyland presents its mansion as a carefully maintained Southern estate. Tokyo’s version stands inside a darker Gothic manor, giving the attraction a more immediately ominous presence within Fantasyland.
Both attractions still feature the familiar 999 ghosts, Madame Leota, the ballroom dancers, and the graveyard celebration. Both will also spend the final months of 2026 under the control of Jack Skellington.
The timing creates two firm deadlines for guests hoping to experience the regular rides.
Tokyo Disneyland visitors have through August 3. Disneyland guests have through August 7.
After those dates, the classic Haunted Mansion will be absent from both parks until the holiday decorations come down in 2027.
