Disney Pulls the Plug on Greenlit ‘Wonder Man’ Sequel in Brutal U-Turn
Disney has canceled the planned second season of Wonder Man, despite previously giving the sequel the green light. Writers attached to the follow-up have reportedly been released to work on other projects.
The reversal comes only months after Season 2 was approved in March. However, the cancellation happened before the writers’ room opened, meaning scripts were apparently never developed.
Wonder Man starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an aspiring Hollywood actor whose concealed superpowers threatened his chances of landing the leading role in a major studio remake.
Ben Kingsley reprised his role as Trevor Slattery, the unsuccessful performer previously seen in Iron Man 3 (2013) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021).
The show followed Simon and Trevor through auditions, professional rivalries, and the pressures of an industry more interested in commercial appeal than artistic ambition.
It also maintained links to the wider MCU. Damage Control agent P. Cleary returned after appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Ms. Marvel, connecting Simon’s story to the government’s treatment of superpowered individuals.
Unlike many Marvel productions, Wonder Man avoided an apocalyptic threat. Its smaller scale, Hollywood setting, and focus on character made it stand apart from the franchise’s more conventional superhero stories.
Why Has Disney Axed ‘Wonder Man’?
Critics responded warmly. The series earned a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 75 on Metacritic, with particular praise directed toward Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley’s chemistry.
The cancellation therefore appears more likely to have been driven by viewership than reviews.
Disney did not publicly reveal how many people watched the series. However, Wonder Man reached eighth place on Nielsen’s streaming originals chart during the week of January 26 to February 1.
It disappeared from the top 10 the following week.
That short-lived chart performance may not have been enough to justify another season, particularly as Disney and Marvel continue to reduce the number of projects produced for streaming.
The original renewal was already unusual. Loki and Daredevil: Born Again are the only other live-action MCU shows to receive second seasons, while the latter has also secured a third.

Fans Criticize Marvel’s Sudden U-Turn
News of the cancellation quickly prompted frustration from viewers who believed Wonder Man had the potential to become a longer-running Disney+ series.
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt more seen than watching Wonder Man,” one fan wrote on X. “That first season is so special to me and seemed like the perfect show for Marvel to run for years to come. It feels like robbery to not get another season.”

Another wrote, “Canceling ‘Wonder Man’ after already giving it the green light AND after Yahya’s Emmy nom is a huge slap in the face.”
One said, “I can’t fathom Wonder Man being canceled brah. That was the one MCU show I found myself gleefully recommending to people.”
The decision also leaves the show’s story unfinished.
By the finale, Simon had achieved the career breakthrough he had spent years chasing. The fictional Wonder Man movie became a success, seemingly giving him everything he wanted.
He then threw that success away to free Trevor from Damage Control custody. The rescue exposed Simon’s powers and left both characters apparently on the run.
Marvel could still revisit them elsewhere. An individual with knowledge of the situation reportedly told Variety that the studio remains open to using Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery in future projects.
No such return has been announced. With Marvel’s movie and television schedule planned well in advance, neither character currently has an obvious place in the franchise’s immediate future.
