Walt Disney World Resort guests visiting EPCOT over the last few days have noticed something missing at the front of the park. For at least 48 hours, the fountain in front of Spaceship Earth has been dry, and the water effects are turned off.
Spaceship Earth Fountain Not Working
On Wednesday, July 22, WDWNT reported that the fountain in front of Spaceship Earth at the main entrance to EPCOT was not working. The outlet shared a photo and confirmed that the water feature had been dry since at least Tuesday, July 21.
Walt Disney World Resort added this fountain to the main entrance of EPCOT during an overhaul of the area in 2020. Inspired by the original fountain, which stood at EPCOT when the park opened in 1982, it features three transparent pylons engraved with the park’s logo. Water runs down from the pylons, across a diamond-patterned circular base, and into the fountain basin. At night, the fountain comes alive with multicolored lights that synchronize with the light show on Spaceship Earth.
There are still thousands of coins, mostly pennies, sitting in the dry basin of the fountain. However, it’s unclear whether Walt Disney World Resort turned off the water feature to collect the currency or perform unrelated maintenance.
Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort regularly collect coins thrown in fountains, water rides, and other areas at the theme parks to donate to children’s charities. In Central Florida, currency collected from the thousands of wishes made at the Most Magical Place on Earth typically goes to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or Give Kids The World Village, a resort hotel designed for families on Make-A-Wish and similar charity vacations to stay with children experiencing complex medical issues. Families do not pay a dime to stay at Give Kids The World Village.
