Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is one of the rare occasions when guests 14 and older can dress up at Walt Disney World Resort, but that freedom comes with specific rules that party-goers should review before putting together their costumes.
1. No Acting or Posing as a Character
Guests can absolutely dress as their favorite Disney character, but the experience ends there. Walt Disney World Resort is clear about where the line is:
“All Guests may dress as their favorite character, but may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests.”
2. Keep It Family-Friendly
Whatever you wear needs to be appropriate for a theme park full of families and young children. The official guidelines state:
“Costumes must be family-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent.”
3. No Prop Weapons
Anything that could be confused with an actual weapon — even in a costume context — is off the table:
“Costumes may not contain any props or accessories that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.”
4. Nothing Sharp or Pointed
Even props and accessories that don’t look like weapons can still run afoul of the rules if they pose a physical risk to other Magic Kingdom Park guests or cast members:
“Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.”
5. Think Twice Before Layering
Elaborate multi-layer costumes won’t get you turned away outright, but they may slow your entry to Magic Kingdom Park significantly:
“Layered costumes or costume props that surround the entire body are strongly discouraged and may be subject to additional security screening.”
6. Nothing That Touches the Ground
Full-length trailing fabric is a tripping hazard for you and the guests around you, especially on rides:
“Costumes may not reach or drag on the ground. (for example, full-length Princess dresses)”
7. Capes Must Stay Above the Waist
Capes are permitted, but they come with a length restriction for the same safety reasons as the ground-contact rule:
“Capes may be worn if the length does not go below the waist.”
8. No Costume Masks — At All
Face coverings for medical purposes are still permitted at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, but costume masks of any kind are not:
“Costume masks of any kind may not be worn.”
9. Headwear Cannot Cover the Face
Themed hats, ears, and other headpieces are all welcome — with one important caveat:
“Themed T-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts and hats are acceptable. Acceptable accessories include: transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords and tutus. Costume headwear may be worn as long as it does not cover the face.”
Religious headwear that covers portions of the face is an acknowledged exception to this rule.
A Practical Note Before You Go
When in doubt, leave it out. Policy enforcement at the gate is handled by individual security cast members, and a costume that passes one night may get flagged the next. The safest approach is to stay well within the guidelines rather than push them to the limit.
Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party runs on select nights at Magic Kingdom Park from August 7 through October 31, 2026.
