Disney World Doubles Down on Indefinite Closure of Polynesian Resort Area

Disney has once again updated guests on the refurbishment of Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort—but the latest development has created even more uncertainty about when the popular outdoor lounge will welcome visitors back.

Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace has been closed since April as refurbishment work continues at the resort’s Grand Ceremonial House. While Disney had initially indicated the closure would end in late June, a recent update appeared to extend the timeline considerably before disappearing from the company’s official website.

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has been a cornerstone of Walt Disney World Resort since opening alongside Magic Kingdom in 1971. Designed around the atmosphere of the South Pacific, the Deluxe Resort is home to lush tropical gardens, waterfront views across Seven Seas Lagoon, and several of Walt Disney World’s most recognizable dining locations, including ‘Ohana, Kona Café, Capt. Cook’s, and the highly sought-after Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto.

Throughout 2026, guests staying at or visiting the resort have encountered significant construction tied to the ongoing refurbishment of the Grand Ceremonial House. The project has included exterior enhancements, temporary transportation adjustments, and construction walls surrounding portions of the resort’s main entrance and lobby while operations have continued.

Among the most noticeable temporary closures has been Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace.

Although Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto has remained open indoors, the attached outdoor seating area has stayed closed throughout the refurbishment. The terrace has long been a favorite alternative for guests unable to secure one of the limited seats inside the interactive lounge. Visitors can typically order the same signature tropical beverages and menu items while enjoying live entertainment and views of Seven Seas Lagoon, making it one of the resort’s most popular evening destinations. Disney also recommends the terrace as a prime location to sip one of Trader Sam’s specialty cocktails while watching Magic Kingdom’s nighttime fireworks.

When work first began, Disney’s official refurbishment calendar listed the closure through late June. That date came and went without any further announcements, prompting speculation about when the venue might finally return.

According to reports from Kenny the Pirate, Disney recently revised its refurbishment notice to state that Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace would remain closed through late October 2026 while work on the Grand Ceremonial House continued. The update represented the first revised reopening estimate since the project began.

However, the situation quickly changed again. Shortly afterward, Walt Disney World’s official website removed the October timeframe altogether. Instead, the listing now simply states: “Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace is currently closed for refurbishment… Please check back here for updates.”

Without a reopening date now listed, guests visiting throughout the remainder of the summer and into the Halloween season should not expect the outdoor lounge to be available unless Disney announces otherwise.

Thankfully, Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto continues welcoming guests each day, offering its themed atmosphere, interactive effects, collectible tiki mugs, and extensive cocktail menu. Even so, the venue remains one of the most in-demand lounges at Walt Disney World, with lines often forming before opening and waits regularly exceeding an hour due to its limited capacity.

Until Disney provides another official update, Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace remains without a confirmed reopening date as refurbishment work continues around Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.
