Tom Holland Identifies His Spider-Man Replacement Ahead of New MCU Movie
Tom Holland has played Spider-Man for nearly a decade, but he already knows which young actor he would like to see follow him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The timing of that revelation could not be more striking.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) is only weeks away from its July 31 theatrical release. Early screenings are expected to begin July 29 for Prime members, followed by premium large-format events on July 30.
Holland remains firmly positioned as Marvel’s Peter Parker heading into the new movie. Even so, he recently identified Owen Cooper as an actor who could eventually take his place.

The suggestion does not represent an official casting decision. Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have not announced plans to replace Holland, and Cooper has not publicly joined the Spider-Man franchise.
However, Holland’s willingness to name a potential successor offers a revealing look at how he views his future.
Holland Knows the Role Cannot Last Forever
Spider-Man changed Holland’s life.
Before entering the MCU, he was a talented young actor best known for projects such as The Impossible (2012). After appearing in Captain America: Civil War (2016), he became one of the most recognizable actors in the world.
The role brought him global fame, major box office success, and a permanent place in superhero movie history.
It also came with enormous expectations.
Holland has played Peter Parker through high school, alien invasions, the loss of Tony Stark, battles across the multiverse, and the complete erasure of his identity from the memories of everyone he loves.
That journey has required years of physical training, promotional tours, and long production schedules.
It is understandable that Holland does not expect to continue forever.
He has repeatedly expressed interest in pursuing projects beyond Spider-Man, including dramatic roles and producing opportunities. That does not mean he is ready to leave Marvel immediately, but it does show that he sees an eventual ending.
Why Owen Cooper Makes Sense
Holland’s chosen successor is not an established superhero star.
Owen Cooper became widely known after delivering an acclaimed performance in Adolescence (2025). His work earned immediate praise and positioned him as one of the most promising young actors of his generation.
Holland described Cooper as exceptionally talented and recognized the attention surrounding his career.
On paper, the choice makes sense.
Spider-Man has traditionally been introduced as a teenager or young adult. Cooper’s age would allow Marvel or Sony to begin another long-term story without immediately aging the character beyond his formative years.
More importantly, Cooper has already demonstrated emotional maturity as an actor.
Spider-Man requires more than athletic movement and quick jokes. The person playing Peter Parker must make audiences care about his personal losses, awkward decisions, family relationships, and moral responsibilities.
Holland brought those qualities to the role. His recommendation suggests he believes Cooper could do the same.

This Is Not an Official Recasting
The word “replacement” can easily create the wrong impression.
Holland did not announce that he is leaving. Cooper did not confirm that he is joining Marvel. No studio executive has said that a new Spider-Man is on the way.
Holland simply named the actor he would like to see take over when the time eventually arrives.
That distinction matters, especially with Spider-Man: Brand New Day approaching theaters.
The upcoming movie is expected to continue Holland’s story after the dramatic conclusion of Spider-Man: No Way Home(2021). Peter Parker is now living in a world where nobody remembers him, creating an opportunity for a more grounded and independent Spider-Man adventure.
The new film could establish the foundation for several more appearances.
If Marvel and Sony move forward with another trilogy, Holland could remain in the role well into his 30s. Cooper, meanwhile, would continue building his own career before any possible transition could occur.
Holland Could Stay Connected to Marvel
Holland’s vision for the future involves more than simply naming another actor.
He wants to help whoever eventually becomes Spider-Man.
Holland has credited Robert Downey Jr. with being a mentor during his first Marvel appearances. Their connection reflected the relationship between Tony Stark and Peter Parker, but it also extended to Holland’s real experience entering a massive franchise.
Now, Holland hopes to offer that same support to someone else.
That could mean guiding a younger actor through the intense attention attached to the role. It could also mean remaining involved behind the scenes, perhaps through producing or creative development.
Holland has already spent years learning how Marvel movies operate. He understands the secrecy, physical demands, fan expectations, and constant media attention.
That knowledge could make him a valuable resource even after he stops playing Peter Parker.
Marvel Does Not Need To Rush
There is also little reason for Marvel or Sony to replace Holland soon.
His Spider-Man movies have generated billions of dollars worldwide. Spider-Man: No Way Home became one of the most successful films ever released, while Holland remains closely associated with the character among younger audiences.
A recasting would carry significant risk.
The studios would need to decide whether to introduce another Peter Parker, move toward Miles Morales, or build a completely different version of the Spider-Man franchise.
For now, continuing with Holland is the simpler option.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day gives the studios a chance to test how audiences respond to Peter Parker’s next era. If the film succeeds, Holland could remain central to Marvel’s future for years.
A Successor for Another Day
Holland’s endorsement of Cooper is fascinating because it gives fans a possible glimpse at a very distant future.
Cooper may never play Spider-Man. Another actor could eventually emerge as the studio’s preferred choice. Marvel could also decide that the next major live-action Spider-Man should be Miles Morales rather than another Peter Parker.
Nothing is settled.
What is clear is that Holland has started considering his legacy.
He does not appear interested in clinging to Spider-Man until audiences demand a change. Instead, he wants to leave the role in capable hands and help the next actor succeed.
That transition is not happening today.
As Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters, Tom Holland is still Peter Parker. Owen Cooper is merely the actor he believes could someday follow him.
For Marvel fans, that day may remain far away.
