Disney World Confirms One-Night September Change That Could Cut Wait Times at Two Parks

Guests visiting Walt Disney World this September may notice that Disney has made a surprising adjustment to one of its most valuable hotel perks. While it may seem like a simple scheduling change, the move could have a noticeable impact on wait times at both Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

Disney has confirmed that Extended Evening Hours will take place at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on September 16 instead of Magic Kingdom. The perk allows guests staying at Deluxe Disney Resort hotels and select other resorts to remain inside the park for two additional hours after regular closing.

At first glance, that may disappoint guests who were hoping for extra time in Magic Kingdom. But the switch could actually create a better experience for everyone.

Disney Is Trying To Balance Two Popular Experiences

Every fall, Magic Kingdom transforms for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. The separately ticketed event remains one of the resort’s most popular seasonal offerings, bringing in thousands of guests eager to watch exclusive entertainment, collect candy, meet rare Disney characters, and enjoy Halloween-themed entertainment.

Because party guests can enter Magic Kingdom several hours before the event officially begins, the park becomes increasingly crowded during the evening.

If Extended Evening Hours were also taking place there, Deluxe Resort guests would remain inside alongside party attendees, making the park even busier.

Instead, Disney appears to be spreading guests across multiple parks.

By moving Extended Evening Hours to Hollywood Studios, eligible hotel guests have somewhere else to spend their evening while Halloween Party visitors enjoy a little more breathing room inside Magic Kingdom.

Disney hasn’t officially said crowd management is the reason for the adjustment, but it certainly makes operational sense.

Hollywood Studios Guests Could See Much Lower Waits

The biggest winner may actually be guests visiting Hollywood Studios.

Extended Evening Hours routinely produce some of the shortest attraction waits of the day because only a limited number of guests qualify for the benefit.

That means rides like Slinky Dog Dash, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets, and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror often become much easier to experience after regular park closing.

Rather than spending an hour or more waiting for each attraction, guests may be able to experience several major rides during the two-hour event.

For many visitors, that’s one of the biggest advantages of staying at a qualifying Disney hotel.

Halloween Party Could Feel Less Crowded

The benefits don’t stop at Hollywood Studios.

With fewer Deluxe Resort guests remaining inside Magic Kingdom, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party could become easier to navigate as well.

That may lead to shorter waits for attractions, less congestion around trick-or-treat locations, and more space for guests watching the Boo-to-You Halloween Parade or Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular fireworks.

While the party will still draw large crowds, every reduction in attendance helps improve the overall guest experience.

Disney regularly tweaks park operations throughout the year, and this appears to be another example of the company using scheduling changes to better distribute crowds across the resort.

For guests visiting on September 16, it may end up being one of those rare nights where everyone benefits. Hollywood Studios visitors receive two extra hours with lower wait times, while Halloween Party guests enjoy a less crowded Magic Kingdom than they otherwise might have experienced.
