HBO Moves Forward With New ‘Harry Potter’ Season 2 Casting

HBO’s new Harry Potter series is still months away from its debut, but work on the second season is already gathering pace behind the scenes.

The television reboot wrapped production on its first season earlier this year and is expected to premiere during the holiday season. Adapted from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the series marks the beginning of HBO’s long-term plan to retell J.K. Rowling’s seven novels across multiple seasons.

Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout lead the cast as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. The trio was selected following an extensive search across the UK and Ireland.

They are joined by a veteran supporting cast that includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Other confirmed cast members include Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy. Rory Wilmot will play Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson has been cast as Dudley Dursley, and Louise Brealey will portray flying instructor Madam Hooch.

Several characters omitted from the original Warner Bros. films are also expected to appear in the HBO adaptation, which has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to delivering a more faithful version of the books.

That commitment is now becoming clearer as attention shifts toward Season 2.

HBO Expands Casting Ahead of ‘Chamber of Secrets’

According to Deadline, casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann have begun searching for another young actor to join the series.

The role being cast is expected to debut in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which HBO is expected to begin filming later this year.

Fans of Rowling’s novels will immediately recognize the importance of the character. Although absent from much of the later film franchise, the Hogwarts student became a recurring presence throughout the books and developed a far larger storyline than moviegoers ever saw.

The character first appears as an eager first-year Gryffindor and one of Harry’s most enthusiastic supporters.

Armed with a camera, he frequently follows Harry around Hogwarts, hoping to capture photographs of the famous student. His admiration for Harry quickly makes him one of the most memorable additions to the second novel.

His story takes a darker turn when he becomes one of several victims targeted during the Chamber of Secrets attacks.

In the original 2002 film adaptation, the role was played by Hugh Mitchell. The character never properly returned to the movie series, although references remained scattered throughout later installments.

The books, however, gave him a much larger journey.

His younger brother Dennis eventually joins Hogwarts, and both characters become active members of Dumbledore’s Army. They continue supporting Harry throughout the growing conflict against Lord Voldemort.

By the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the character secretly returns to Hogwarts to participate in the Battle of Hogwarts despite being underage.

He is later revealed to have died during the battle, making him one of the youngest casualties of the Second Wizarding War.

Given HBO’s promise of a book-accurate adaptation, the actor selected for the role could potentially remain part of the series for years.

More Key Roles Still Waiting to Be Filled

The latest casting search is far from the only challenge facing HBO before cameras roll on Season 2.

One major role is already expected to require recasting.

In May, it was confirmed that Gracie Cochrane, who portrays Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will not return for the second season.

That development creates a significant vacancy because Ginny becomes central to the events of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The youngest Weasley sibling unknowingly falls under the influence of Tom Riddle’s diary and becomes deeply connected to the mystery surrounding the reopening of the Chamber.

Her storyline ultimately drives much of the novel’s climax and introduces audiences to one of Voldemort’s most important magical creations.

The role of Tom Riddle also remains under intense speculation.

The younger version of Voldemort appears through an enchanted diary, allowing Harry to interact with a preserved memory of the future Dark Lord. The character serves as one of the most important figures in the second book despite appearing only briefly.

Recent rumors have linked the Tom Riddle role to Owen Cooper, who gained widespread attention following his performance in Netflix’s Adolescence.

Speculation intensified after fans noticed several young Harry Potter cast members following Cooper on social media.

Neither HBO nor Cooper has publicly addressed the rumors.

Many fans, however, believe the actor would be a strong fit for the role after his recent appearance as the younger version of Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights (2026).

Questions also remain surrounding the casting of the adult Voldemort.

Although the character is expected to have only a limited role early in the series, several high-profile names have been floated by fans and industry insiders.

Among the actors frequently mentioned are Paul Bettany, Tom Hiddleston, and Tilda Swinton. Cillian Murphy has denied his involvement in the franchise.
