Disney Just Gave the First Full Look at the Story Behind Its Newest Land

Construction walls have been up at Hollywood Studios for a while now, and the speculation about what is rising behind them has been running at full speed since the first pieces of steel became visible above the barriers. Disney just ended a significant portion of that speculation with a detailed reveal about the story framework for Monstropolis, the new Monsters Inc. land coming to Hollywood Studios, and the narrative Disney and Pixar built around the land is genuinely impressive.

Here is everything Disney just confirmed.

The Story

Monstropolis picks up where Monsters, Inc. left off. When James P. Sullivan and Mike Wazowski discovered that human laughter generates significantly more power than screams, it did not just solve the energy crisis at Monsters Inc. It transformed the entire culture of Monstropolis. Fear gave way to curiosity. The decontamination protocols that defined how monsters viewed humans for generations began to feel unnecessary. And for the first time, the doors separating the monster world from the human world started to feel less like barriers and more like possibilities.

That cultural shift is what the entire land is built around. Monstropolis is ready to meet humans face to face. The occasion has a name.

H.U.M.A.N. Day

H.U.M.A.N. Day, short for Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice, marks the first time humans have ever been invited into Monstropolis. Part celebration, part cultural exchange, the event is designed to introduce humans to monster city life while helping monsters discover that humans are not as frightening as generations of cultural conditioning have suggested. The city’s official newspaper, the Monstropolis Horn, has been covering the historic decision with appropriate civic excitement.

The Department of Human Relations, yes that HR department, has been established to spearhead the invitation and help monsters better understand humans as welcomed guests.

What Is Inside the Land

Human guests visiting Monstropolis on H.U.M.A.N. Day will explore the city, meet its citizens, and taste unique cuisine. Confirmed destinations include Harryhausen’s, the iconic restaurant from the original film, and the Glob Theater. The streets of Monstropolis feature storefronts and industries that reflect the quirky, character-filled world fans recognize from the film.

The headline attraction inside the land will be set within Monsters, Inc., and will take guests on a journey into the famous door vault. Disney confirmed this will be the company’s first-ever suspended-and-vertical-lift roller coaster, a category of ride technology that currently does not exist anywhere in the Disney parks system.

What Is Still Unknown at Disney

No opening date has been announced for Monstropolis. Construction is ongoing, and Disney has indicated that more details will be revealed as the land nears completion. Steel is visible rising behind the construction walls, and the pace of information suggests a significant opening announcement is coming rather than a quiet soft launch.

Hollywood Studios is transforming. Monstropolis is its most technically ambitious addition yet, and the story framework Disney just revealed is worthy of that ambition.
