Universal Orlando Closes 36-Year-Old Classic, Leaving E.T. as the Sole Opening Day Survivor

Universal Orlando Resort has never been afraid of change. In fact, the company practically built its modern identity around constant evolution. Entire lands disappear. Attractions get replaced. New intellectual properties take over old sections of the park almost overnight.

But even with all that change, Universal Studios Florida still managed to hold onto a few pieces of its original DNA for decades.

Now, one of those final pieces has officially stepped aside.

Universal Orlando’s Horror Makeup Show is currently closed for a lengthy reimagining project that will keep the attraction offline through much of 2026. While Universal plans to reopen the show later this year, the returning version will not be identical to the one guests have known for generations.

That distinction matters.

Because with the original Horror Makeup Show now effectively retired, E.T. Adventure becomes the final opening-day attraction still operating at Universal Studios Florida.

The Original Universal Studios Florida Is Almost Gone

When Universal Studios Florida opened back in 1990, the park focused heavily on giving guests the feeling of stepping inside real movie production environments.

The attraction lineup reflected that idea perfectly.

Kongfrontation blended giant animatronics with practical effects. Jaws delivered one of the most famous ride finales in theme park history. Back to the Future: The Ride became an instant classic. Earthquake, Murder, She Wrote, Ghostbusters Spooktacular, and several live-production experiences helped create an atmosphere that felt completely different from Disney.

Today, almost none of those experiences remain.

Universal slowly shifted toward larger franchises, bigger thrills, and more advanced technology. The success of Harry Potter accelerated those changes dramatically, and Epic Universe has now pushed Universal into an entirely new chapter.

For newer fans, the modern version of Universal Studios Florida probably feels completely normal.

For older guests, though, the park can almost feel unrecognizable now.

Horror Makeup Show Returning… But Not The Same

The important thing for fans to understand is that Horror Makeup Show is not disappearing permanently.

Universal fully intends to reopen the attraction later this year after the extended closure wraps up.

The catch is that the returning version is expected to feature major updates and reimagined elements. While the spirit of the attraction may remain, the original form that operated for decades is effectively ending during this closure period.

That is why many longtime fans are treating this as the symbolic end of another classic Universal experience.

The show represented one of the last attractions still tied closely to Universal’s old practical-effects and movie-studio identity.

Once the reimagined version debuts, the original attraction officially becomes part of Universal history.

Universal Is Now Replacing Attractions Faster Than Ever

The other major takeaway here is how quickly Universal Orlando now cycles through attractions.

Hollywood Rip Ride RockIt already reached the end of its run and has been completely demolished. The replacement, a Fast & Furious-themed coaster, is expected to open in 2027 and will completely reshape the skyline of Universal Studios Florida.

At the same time, Fast & Furious: Supercharged is also reportedly approaching permanent closure in 2027.

That attraction only opened a few years ago, yet Universal already appears ready to move on.

Even some of the newest family additions are now seeing updates. Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp in DreamWorks Land is heading into refurbishment despite the land itself still feeling relatively brand-new to many guests.

Universal clearly wants every section of the resort constantly evolving.

The company no longer seems interested in letting attractions sit unchanged for decades the way they once did.

E.T. Now Carries The Entire Legacy

That leaves E.T. Adventure in an incredibly unique position.

The ride is no longer just another attraction tucked away in the corner of the park. It has become the final living connection to opening-day Universal Studios Florida.

Everything about it feels different from modern theme park design. The pacing is slower. The sets feel handcrafted. The storytelling leans emotional rather than explosive.

And fans love it for exactly those reasons.

As Universal Orlando keeps racing toward the future with Epic Universe, massive coasters, and new franchises, E.T. Adventure now serves as the final reminder of where the resort originally started.

Once Horror Makeup Show returns in its reimagined form later this year, that reality becomes official.
