Why Is Universal Closing Down a 36 Year-Old Opening Day Attraction?

What was supposed to be a nostalgic goodbye at Universal Studios Florida has quickly turned into one of the hottest tickets inside the park today.

Fans hoping to catch the original version of the Horror Make-Up Show before it closes tonight are now being required to grab wristbands just to secure entry for the attraction’s final performances. And judging by the crowds building around the theater, demand is much bigger than many guests expected.

Theme park insider HHNSpeculationMatt shared photos from outside the attraction showing wristband pickup moving directly outside the theater entrance as Universal team members work to manage the growing turnout.

The post read:

“Wristband distribution has moved just outside the theatre!

For a show that has quietly operated inside Universal Studios Florida since 1990, today suddenly feels a lot more like a major farewell event.

The Horror Make-Up Show was never the loudest attraction in the park. It did not have massive roller coasters, giant screens, or movie franchise marketing plastered across billboards.

Instead, it built a fanbase the old-fashioned way.

Guests discovered it by accident, sat down for a break from the Florida heat, and usually walked out wondering why they had never seen it before.

The attraction became famous for combining practical horror movie effects with nonstop comedy, audience participation, and improv-heavy performances that often changed from show to show. Inside the Pantages Theater, guests watched performers demonstrate classic special effects techniques using prosthetics, fake gore, props, and volunteers pulled directly from the crowd.

Even people who hated horror movies usually ended up loving the show because it never took itself too seriously.

Over time, it became one of those “you HAVE to see this” Universal attractions longtime fans recommended to everyone visiting Orlando.

Today’s wristband rollout is easily one of the clearest signs yet that Universal underestimated just how emotional fans would get over the show’s closure.

As final performances approach, guests are flooding the Hollywood section of the park trying to lock down seats before the attraction disappears in its current form. Universal appears to be using the wristband system to prevent massive standby lines from taking over the area throughout the day.

For visitors arriving later this afternoon, there is a very real chance performances could reach capacity quickly.

Closing-day events have become increasingly common in the theme park world, especially when beloved attractions are retired or heavily altered. But the response surrounding the Horror Make-Up Show feels a little different because the attraction never relied on giant intellectual property branding to stay relevant.

It survived entirely on guest affection.

The current version of the Horror Make-Up Show officially closes beginning May 12 as Universal prepares a major reimagining of the attraction.

The updated version is expected to debut sometime during Winter 2026, according to Universal Orlando.

The company says the new production will include “classic and modern horror properties along with shockingly fun surprises,” while still maintaining the comedy and irreverent tone fans associate with the original.

Naturally, horror fans immediately started speculating about Blumhouse Productions.

The studio has become deeply tied to Halloween Horror Nights in recent years thanks to franchises like M3GAN, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and The Black Phone. Because of that, many guests believe the refreshed show could eventually lean heavily into modern horror brands rather than Universal’s older movie library.

Right now, though, Universal is keeping details tightly under wraps.

Even though this is technically a Universal story, the closure could still affect guests planning larger Orlando vacations that include both Universal and Walt Disney World Resort.

A lot of travelers build split vacations around both resorts, especially during summer travel season. Attractions like the Horror Make-Up Show gave guests an easy indoor break from intense Florida weather and long ride waits.

Without it, the Hollywood section of Universal Studios Florida may feel noticeably busier during peak afternoon hours.

The show also appealed to guests who wanted something different from major thrill rides. Families, older visitors, and casual theme park fans often used it as a slower-paced entertainment option between larger attractions.

And emotionally, longtime fans are losing another piece of original Universal Studios Florida history.

The park has spent years evolving away from its old “behind the scenes movie studio” roots in favor of fully immersive franchise lands. The Horror Make-Up Show was one of the last remaining attractions still deeply tied to the idea of movie-making itself.

Tonight Marks the End of an Era

By tonight, the original version of the Horror Make-Up Show will officially stop operating after more than three decades inside Universal Studios Florida.

That is an incredibly long run for any theme park attraction, especially one that relied almost entirely on live performers and practical effects instead of giant blockbuster franchises.

And based on today’s crowds, fans absolutely know what they are about to lose.

If you are inside Universal Studios Florida today and ever wanted to see the Horror Make-Up Show one last time, do not wait too long. Those wristbands are becoming the hottest item in the park right now.
