Dollywood To Make Guest Change After Two Decades, Warning Issued

A major change is arriving at several Dollywood resort locations this summer, and guests planning a trip to Tennessee may want to prepare before packing their bags.

Dollywood Parks & Resorts has confirmed that three of its properties are moving to a cashless system in the coming weeks. While the main Dollywood theme park will still accept cash payments for now, guests visiting Dollywood’s Splash Country, DreamMore Resort and Spa, or HeartSong Lodge & Resort will soon need another form of payment to make purchases.

Once the changes begin, employees at those locations will no longer be able to accept cash transactions.

The rollout will begin at Dollywood’s Splash Country on May 16, coinciding with the water park’s reopening for the summer season. The now 35-acre attraction has welcomed guests since 2001 and remains one of the Smoky Mountains’ most popular warm-weather destinations.

Splash Country features a variety of attractions, including Wild River Falls, Mountain Waves, and Downbound Float Trip. With large summer crowds expected once again, many guests will notice the transition immediately.

The remaining two locations — DreamMore Resort and Spa and HeartSong Lodge & Resort — will officially switch to cashless payments on June 11.

DreamMore Resort first opened in 2015 as Dollywood’s original onsite hotel. Inspired by Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain upbringing, the resort includes more than 300 guest rooms, dining locations, a pool area with a lazy river, complimentary transportation to the parks, and early park entry benefits. HeartSong Lodge, which debuted in 2023, is the newest addition to Dollywood’s growing resort lineup.

At all three properties, guests will still have multiple payment options available. Credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other mobile wallet services will all continue to work as normal.

For visitors who normally rely on cash, Dollywood says “Cash to Card” kiosks will be available throughout the affected properties. These kiosks allow guests to exchange physical cash for prepaid cards that can be used around the resort and at other locations that accept prepaid payments after the trip ends.

Importantly, Dollywood says there is no additional fee to load money onto the cards. Families traveling with children who carry spending money may want to plan ahead before arriving, especially during busier summer dates when kiosk lines could become longer.

The company says the move is designed to improve efficiency and safety across the resort experience. Cashless systems can reduce transaction times, shorten lines, and eliminate the need for employees to handle physical money throughout the day.

Dollywood also pointed to operational benefits behind the transition, including fewer security concerns and less time spent balancing registers or transporting cash. The resort described the goal as creating a “smoother” and “safer” experience for both guests and employees.

The move follows a wider trend throughout the attractions industry. Disney parks, Universal destinations, sports arenas, and entertainment venues across the country have increasingly embraced cashless payment systems over the last several years.

Still, not every guest is expected to welcome the update. Many visitors prefer using cash because it provides a clearer way to manage vacation spending. Once the cash is gone, the budget is finished — something digital payments don’t always replicate.

The transition may also create challenges for older guests, visitors without access to banking services, or anyone uncomfortable relying entirely on cards and mobile payments. While the prepaid kiosks provide an alternative, they still add an extra step during a vacation day.

For some longtime Dollywood fans, the shift may feel unusual at a destination often praised for its traditional atmosphere and close ties to Smoky Mountain culture.

Despite the changes, the main Dollywood theme park itself is not currently going cashless, meaning guests visiting the park alone can still use traditional payment methods.

However, anyone staying at DreamMore or HeartSong — or spending a day at Splash Country — will need to plan ahead before arrival. The mountain scenery, Dolly Parton-inspired touches, and signature atmosphere remain unchanged. Guests will simply need to pay a little differently this summer.
