Opening Day Disaster: Disney Coaster Catches Fire in Orlando

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad came back from its refurbishment today. It was supposed to be a good day. Magic Kingdom had a new guidemap ready with a bold “REFRESHED!” label in purple pointing guests toward the attraction. The height requirement had been lowered, meaning more families could finally ride together. The wildest ride in the wilderness was back and Disney wanted everyone to know it.

And then around 5:45 PM a fire broke out in the load and unload area and a cast member had to deploy a fire extinguisher directly on the track.

Scott Spillers was there and captured it on camera, sharing the photo on X as @ScottSpillers with the caption: “A little mishap this afternoon during Big Thunder Mountain’s first day of operation after the long refurb. #BigThunder #MagicKingdom #WaltDisneyWorld”

The image shows a cast member actively using the extinguisher on the track, white discharge visible in the loading zone. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed immediately. As of the time we are writing this it is still closed. Disney has not made a statement. No injuries have been reported, which is the important thing, but that does not make the situation any less striking.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Closed. On its own reopening day. After a months-long refurbishment. Because of a fire.

We genuinely cannot believe we are writing this sentence.

What Today Was Supposed to Be

Okay, let us back up and give the full picture because the contrast between what was planned and what happened is actually quite remarkable.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been closed for a significant stretch of time and Frontierland has felt noticeably different without it. The coaster is not the most intense ride in Magic Kingdom. It is not trying to be. What it is, is one of the most genuinely enjoyable and reliably crowd-pleasing rides in the park, and its absence has left the kind of gap that guests feel even if they cannot quite identify what is missing.

Today Magic Kingdom released a new guidemap to celebrate the return. The map features a big bold “REFRESHED!” label next to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s name in purple, and another “RECHARGED!” label in the same style next to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin in Tomorrowland, which also recently returned with updates. Disney was leaning into the moment, making sure guests could not miss the news that these attractions were back.

The guidemap also carried a meaningful update that the fans tracking this closely will care about. According to BlogMickey, the new map includes a lower minimum height requirement for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. That is genuinely good news and the kind of thing that matters at a family-focused park like Magic Kingdom. A lower height requirement means families with younger kids who were previously told to sit this one out can now ride together. That is a real quality of life improvement and it should have been the headline of the day.

Instead the headline is a fire extinguisher.

The Situation as It Stands Right Now

Here is what we know and what we do not know.

A fire call was placed around 5:45 PM. A cast member was photographed deploying a fire extinguisher on the track in the loading area of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The ride went down. No injuries have been reported. Disney has not explained what caused the incident or when the ride will reopen.

The cast member response appears to have been swift and appropriate. Having someone on site who acts quickly when something goes wrong in a loading area is exactly how these situations are supposed to go. The absence of injuries is the most important detail in this story.

But the ride is still closed, and we have no timeline for when it comes back.

For guests currently in Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is unavailable. For guests planning to visit in the coming days, the operational status when you arrive is the key variable. Check the My Disney Experience app before you plan your morning around it.

What This Means for Your Magic Kingdom Visit

Once Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is cleared to operate again, a few things are worth knowing.

Reopening days at popular attractions already bring elevated crowds. Guests who missed the ride during the refurbishment make it a priority. The new guidemap is actively steering guests toward it. The lowered height requirement is going to bring new families into the mix who could not ride before. Demand for this attraction was going to be high regardless of today’s incident.

Add in the attention today’s photo has generated online and demand is going to be even higher when the ride comes back. Plan accordingly. If Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a must-do for your group, prioritize it first thing in the morning or secure a Lightning Lane selection early. Do not assume you can walk up to it mid-afternoon and get on without a significant wait.

For families with children who were previously turned away because of the old height requirement, the good news is the lower threshold is in effect and it will still be there once the ride reopens. That specific update does not go away. It just got delayed by a very unfortunate afternoon.

We are keeping a close eye on updates from the park and we will have more when Disney addresses the incident and confirms the reopening timeline. In the meantime we are sending positive thoughts to the cast members who had to deal with this on what was supposed to be a celebratory day.

Check the My Disney Experience app tonight and tomorrow morning before you head to Magic Kingdom. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is closed right now and there is no official reopening timeline from Disney yet. When it does come back, expect longer than usual waits for at least a few days. We will update this the moment we have new information. And if you are still looking for something to do in Frontierland while the coaster is down, Haunted Mansion is right next door and the wait times there are usually significantly more manageable.
