From skipping lines to specialty experiences, there’s always something being positioned as worth the extra cost. Lately, one offering in particular has been pitched as a simple way to make your day easier.
But once guests actually try it, the reaction has been very different.
Instead of feeling like a helpful upgrade, some visitors say it quickly becomes a hassle. What looked like a smart purchase before entering the park has left people second-guessing their decision by the end of the day.
Why Guests Feel the Need to Buy
Spending a full day at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida isn’t easy, especially during the hotter months. The heat and humidity can wear you down fast, and staying hydrated becomes a top priority.
Because of that, guests often look for ways to keep drinks flowing without constantly paying for bottled beverages. The idea of buying something once and using it throughout the day feels like a win.
It makes sense on paper. Long park days, lots of walking, and rising costs all push visitors toward options that promise convenience and savings. That expectation sets the stage for what happens next.
The Appeal of Refillable Options
Universal has long leaned into refillable drink programs, giving guests the option to purchase a container and refill it throughout the park. It’s designed to simplify things.
Instead of buying drink after drink, guests can stop at refill stations and grab what they need. Families especially see the benefit, since it can reduce repeated purchases.
There’s also a practical side. Carrying one item feels easier than juggling multiple cups. It’s quick, convenient, and seems like a no-brainer when you’re trying to stay cool.
At least, that’s how it’s supposed to work.
Where It Starts to Fall Apart
The problems begin once guests start using certain themed versions of the refillable option.
The T-Rex sipper has become a major talking point, not for its design, but for how difficult it can be to use. One guest even issued a clear warning: “BEWARE.”
They explained that the sipper “has no straw inside, which means you have to turn it upside down to drink from it, and there’s a small hole at the bottom of the sipper piece. It spills whatever is in it all over you.”
That experience hasn’t been unique. Guests have pointed out similar issues with other themed options, such as the Bumblebee and Bart Simpson sippers. Many say they leak when set down, making them hard to manage on a busy park day.
That creates frustration quickly. You can’t leave them in a bag without worrying. You can’t place them on a table without checking for spills. What should feel easy ends up requiring constant attention.
Cleaning also becomes an issue. Guests say the design makes it hard to wash properly, especially with smaller openings and multiple parts. In the Florida heat, that’s not something people want to deal with.
The Option That Keeps It Simple
Not all refillable drink options come with these challenges. Many guests say the standard, non-themed refillable mugs are much easier to handle.
These simpler designs focus on function over appearance. They’re easier to drink from, easier to clean, and less likely to leak. That alone makes a big difference over the course of a long day.
Because of that, more visitors are recommending sticking with the basics. It may not be as exciting, but it tends to work the way people expect.
There’s also another approach. Guests can bring their own reusable water bottles into the parks and refill them at Coca-Cola Freestyle machines. Water is available, eliminating the need to rely on a specific product.

Guests are willing to spend extra when something genuinely improves their experience. But when an add-on introduces new frustrations, it doesn’t take long for opinions to shift.
