Female James Bond One Step Closer as Director Names Actress
The conversation around a female James Bond continues. While Daniel Craig, his No Time to Die (2021) co-star Ana de Armas, and longtime producer Barbara Broccoli have expressed skepticism, others remain interested in seeing a woman take up the iconic role.
Amazon MGM Studios is currently moving forward with a new James Bond movie reboot. Denis Villeneuve, who’s currently completing the final chapter of his Dune trilogy, is set to direct, with Peaky Blinders (2013) writer Steven Knight handling the script.

But while several male actors are being discussed as potential frontrunners to replace Craig, including Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Jacob Elordi (Wuthering Heights), and Callum Turner (Eternity), one female star has thrown her hat into the ring.
Sydney Sweeney has become a household name thanks to roles in The Handmaid’s Tale (2017), Euphoria (2019), The White Lotus (2021), and films such as Madame Web (2024) and Immaculate (2024). But while she seems well suited to playing a Bond girl, she told Variety last year, “I think I’d have more fun as James Bond.”

Now, director Paul Feig, who worked with Sweeney on The Housemaid (2026), has publicly backed her as a potential 007. “There have been some cool Bond girls, but come on, let her be the super-spy, she’s great,” he told The Sun.
“She’s one of the hardest-working people I know, so professional, so smart, so savvy. I think she’d be a good spy.”
The idea of a woman playing Bond gained renewed attention recently when Euronews Culture reported that Jesse Buckley (Hamnet, 2025) had been cast as 007 in the reboot. The story, published on April 1, was an April Fool’s prank—but the discussion continues.
Amazon MGM Studios has not yet announced a release date for the untitled Bond reboot, leaving speculation about the next 007 wide open.
