Surprise! Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Attraction Is Already Back at Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom Park guests weren’t expecting any good news out of Frontierland just yet, as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad isn’t scheduled to reopen for another month. But Walt Disney World Resort is already delivering some magic out of the iconic roller coaster.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is Waking Up

The Frontierland roller coaster has been closed since January 2025 for the most sweeping renovation in its history. Over the past 15-plus months, Walt Disney World Resort has steadily revealed what’s coming: an entirely retracked steel coaster with new trains, refreshed set pieces, and an all-new Rainbow Caverns sequence featuring shimmering stalagmites, phosphorescent pools, and audio-animatronic bats.

Work on the queue area and attraction entrance is still wrapping up. Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t confirmed an exact reopening date beyond early May 2026.

The Steam Is Already Rolling

On April 8, WDWNT spotted some new activity in the queue for the Frontierland roller coaster. Two large pipes jutting from a freshly repainted queue building near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad were actively venting steam, the first signs of the special effect feature coming back to life ahead of the May reopening.

Whether Walt Disney Imagineers were running a one-time systems test or whether the effect is now live and staying on isn’t yet clear, but either way, the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness is closer to its return than ever.

Construction walls will stay up around portions of the entrance even after the attraction reopens. The surrounding area is being transformed into Piston Peak National Park, a new Cars (2006)-inspired land taking shape where Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America once stood. This project will keep crews busy in Frontierland long after Big Thunder Mountain Railroad welcomes its first riders back.
