UPDATE: Marvel May Not Release ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in Theaters as Planned
Marvel Studios may be reconsidering the release strategy for one of its most important upcoming films.
New reports indicate the studio has discussed moving the premiere date for Avengers: Doomsday (2026), the next major crossover entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film is currently scheduled to open on December 18, 2026. That date places the MCU blockbuster directly alongside another large-scale release arriving the same day.
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 3 (2026) is also set to debut on December 18.
Marvel’s Next Avengers Event Is Taking Shape
Avengers: Doomsday marks Marvel Studios’ first Avengers film since Avengers: Endgame (2019). That film concluded the Infinity Saga and became one of the highest-grossing movies in history.
The upcoming project continues the MCU’s Multiverse Saga and will lead directly into Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).

The story centers on a growing multiversal conflict tied to Doctor Doom. Robert Downey Jr. will portray the iconic Marvel Comics villain after previously playing Tony Stark across the MCU.
Marvel has assembled one of its largest ensembles in years.
Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, Anthony Mackie appears as Captain America, and Sebastian Stan reprises Bucky Barnes. Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Letitia Wright’s Shuri, Winston Duke’s M’Baku, and Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi are also confirmed.
The roster also includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, David Harbour as Red Guardian, and Danny Ramirez as the new Falcon.

Characters connected to Marvel’s expanding multiverse will also appear.
Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, and Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm will join Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and several legacy X-Men actors, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden.
Report Points to Possible Release Change
The reported schedule discussions appear tied to the crowded December box office.
According to film commentator John Campea, Marvel has explored the possibility of shifting the film’s release date. After contacting someone in “exhibitor relations,” Campea said that “very non-committal discussions have taken place” about moving the film earlier.
The proposed change would move Avengers: Doomsday from December 18 to December 11.
One reason involves premium theatrical formats. Reports indicate Dune 3 will hold an exclusive three-week IMAX run when it opens in theaters.
If that window remains in place, Avengers: Doomsday would not be able to play in IMAX theaters until January 2027.
IMAX screenings often generate a significant portion of revenue for large-scale superhero films, making those early weeks particularly important.
An earlier release date could resolve that problem.

The mid-December window recently opened after the next Jumanji film moved from December 11 to December 25. That shift created space for another major studio release.
Marvel has not officially confirmed any change to its schedule.
For now, Avengers: Doomsday remains set for December 18, 2026.
The film arrives during a period of transition for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the years since Avengers: Endgame, the franchise has faced a more competitive theatrical landscape and shifting audience expectations.
Several MCU films have had a mediocre run at the box office, including Captain America: Brave New World (2025) and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025).

Others have struggled to claw back their budgets.
The Marvels (2023) became the lowest-grossing MCU film after its opening weekend underperformed.
That backdrop places added attention on Marvel’s next Avengers installment.
Avengers: Doomsday is expected to unite heroes from across the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and other Marvel properties as the Multiverse Saga continues.

One major character will not appear in the film.
Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man will instead lead Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), a separate MCU installment that explores the aftermath of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
Whether Marvel ultimately adjusts the release date remains unclear.
