Samuel L. Jackson’s Mace Windu Returns in New ‘Star Wars’ Prequel
Even 20 years after his death in Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith (2005), Mace Windu remains one of the faraway galaxy’s most compelling figures. The Jedi Master, first brought to life by actor Samuel L. Jackson, has inspired countless stories beyond the films, and now he’s about to take center stage again in a brand-new, standalone adventure.

Per TheDirect, Lucasfilm and Dark Horse Comics are giving Mace Windu his own spotlight in Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories – Mace, a graphic novel coming in Fall 2026.
Written by New York Times bestselling author Justina Ireland with interior art by Georges Duarte, additional art by PH Gomes, lettering by ComiCraft, and cover art by Michael Cho, the story takes place shortly after Windu becomes a Jedi Knight.
According to the official synopsis, he is sent to protect an alien king, only to uncover a web of betrayal and conspiracy that threatens an entire planet:
“After bungling a sensitive assignment, a young Mace Windu is sent to protect an alien king. This punishment becomes a daring rescue after the monarch is abducted, and the Jedi Knight is forced into the center of a conspiracy surrounding scheming politicians and ruthless revolutionaries. With danger and betrayal lurking around every corner, Windu must unravel the conspiracy before the planet is engulfed in a civil war. Who knew diplomacy could be so thrilling?”

While Mace Windu has always been a fan favorite, his death in Revenge of the Sith sparked decades of speculation that he might still be alive somewhere in the galaxy. Live-action returns for other prequel-era characters, like Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) and Ahsoka (2023), show that nothing is impossible in this franchise.
Windu first appeared in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), returning in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002), and then Revenge of the Sith, which marked Samuel L. Jackson’s final appearance as the character.
After confronting Darth Sidious/Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), Mace Windu was struck down when Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) intervened.

Animation expanded his story even further.
Windu was voiced by Terrence C. Carson in the 2003 miniseries Star Wars: Clone Wars, who returned in the 2008 film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and continued through the 2008–2020 series of the same name. In 2022, Carson reprised his role in Tales of the Jedi.
Novels such as Shatterpoint (2003) and Star Wars: The Glass Abyss (2024) and comics like Jedi of the Republic – Mace Windu (2017) and Age of Republic – Mace Windu (2019) have continued to flesh out his character away from the screen.
Whether Samuel L. Jackson will wield his purple lightsaber on screen again remains unknown, but for now, fans can dive into Windu’s early adventures and see a side of the Jedi Master they’ve never experienced before.
