‘Buffy’s Nicholas Brendon Dies Aged 54, Family Confirms
Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Nicholas Brendon has died at the age of 54.
For a generation of television viewers, Nicholas Brendon was synonymous with Xander Harris—the sarcastic, steadfast heart of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003).

Across seven seasons, Brendon’s portrayal helped anchor the series, balancing its supernatural stakes with grounded emotion and humor. While vampires, demons, and apocalyptic threats defined the show’s mythology, it was characters like Xander that gave it resonance, offering a human perspective amid the chaos.
Following the success of Buffy, Brendon continued working in television, including a recurring role in Criminal Minds (2005–2022), where he played Kevin Lynch. Though he never fully escaped the shadow of his breakout role, his connection to the Buffy fanbase endured, with frequent convention appearances.
In later years, his career was often marked by personal challenges. He was candid about struggles with addiction, legal issues, and his health, topics that became part of his public narrative as much as his acting work. Even so, his openness about those difficulties resonated with many fans, adding a layer of complexity to how he was perceived beyond his on-screen persona.

His work as Xander Harris remains his defining contribution—a character who, despite lacking supernatural abilities, stood shoulder to shoulder with heroes and became an essential part of one of television’s most influential genre series.
Brendon’s death was announced by his family in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter:
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.
Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was. While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”
As tributes emerge following news of his death, Brendon is being remembered not only for the role that made him famous, but for the impact that role continues to have on audiences revisiting Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003) today.
His passing comes just over a year after the death of his Buffy co-star Michelle Trachtenberg, who passed away in February 2025 aged 39.
