Disney Just Let Obama Back Into This Orlando Attraction

The Hall of Presidents at Magic Kingdom has added new memorabilia honoring President Obama after removing his basketball last month. A golf head cover inspired by Obama’s dog, Bo, is now on display in the lobby.

The New Obama Display

The “Public Lives Personal Memories” display case now features a custom fluffy golf head cover that was a diplomatic gift from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to President Obama during a 2014 Tokyo summit. The golf head cover is accompanied by a placard and a photo of Obama with Bo.

Bo joined the Obama White House family in 2009. Originally named “New Hope,” President Obama’s daughters Sasha and Malia renamed the Portuguese water dog Bo. He passed away at age 12 in 2021.

The Teddy bears that previously occupied this spot have moved to another display case. The bears and book honor President Theodore Roosevelt, the namesake of the Teddy bear, with items dating from circa 1906.

February Obama Basketball Removal

On February 18, 2026, a basketball belonging to President Obama was removed from the Hall of Presidents lobby. The basketball had been displayed in a cabinet dedicated to the personal lives of former presidents, shown next to a photograph of Obama playing basketball and a plaque about his love for the sport.

The photo and plaque remained, but the actual basketball disappeared with an image of President John F. Kennedy with White House pony Macaroni taking over the space.

The basketball was on loan from the Barack Obama Presidential Library. The Obama Center is set to open in Chicago this summer, and the basketball may be displayed there since the museum is planned to have its own basketball court.

Walt Disney World did not issue a public statement on the removal.

Timing Questions

The basketball’s removal occurred around the same time Walt Disney World announced it would extend an exhibit of paintings by President George W. Bush at EPCOT. The “Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors” exhibit will remain on display at the American Adventure Pavilion through the Fourth of July weekend 2026.

The Bush exhibit, which includes over 60 paintings of post-9/11 veterans, first debuted in June 2024 and initially extended through early 2026. The extension is part of Walt Disney World’s celebrations of America’s 250th anniversary.

The timing created speculation about whether the decision was political, though it appeared unlikely given that Obama’s basketball was on loan and could be removed at any time for legitimate curatorial reasons related to the Obama Center opening.

The Diplomatic Gift

The golf head cover represents a diplomatic gift with historical significance. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe presented it to President Obama during a 2014 Tokyo summit, making it an artifact that represents international relations and diplomacy.

The gift being themed to Obama’s dog Bo added personal warmth to the diplomatic exchange, reflecting how the Portuguese water dog had become internationally recognizable during the Obama administration.

Lobby Display Purpose

The “Public Lives Personal Memories” display cases provide guests opportunities to learn about presidents as individuals beyond their political careers, showcasing artifacts related to hobbies, pets, families, and personal interests.

The exhibits help visitors understand presidents as people with lives beyond politics, including items like Kennedy’s connection to White House pony Macaroni, Theodore Roosevelt’s association with Teddy bears, and now Obama’s golf head cover commemorating Bo.

These lobby exhibits serve important functions while guests wait for the next show, transforming the lobby into a mini-museum with authentic artifacts rather than just an empty holding area.

Continued Presence of Obama

Beyond lobby exhibits, President Obama is represented in the main Hall of Presidents show through his audio-animatronic figure, which stands with all other U.S. presidents on stage and delivers a recorded speech during the performance.

The addition of the Bo golf head cover demonstrates Disney’s continued commitment to representing Obama’s presidency through physical items guests can view during Magic Kingdom visits.
