If you’ve ever packed a cooler for Walt Disney World, you already know it’s one of the easiest ways to save money and stay comfortable in the Florida heat. Families do it all the time. You grab a few snacks, throw in some bottled water, maybe pack a sandwich or two, and head to the parks feeling like you’ve outsmarted the system just a little.

But now, Disney security is cracking down on one common cooler “hack” that a lot of guests still assume is totally fine.
Loose ice.
And yes, guests are getting stopped at bag check because of it.
For years, it felt normal to stop by the resort ice machine, fill a bag, dump it into your soft-sided cooler, and use it to keep drinks cold all day. But Disney has been enforcing its rules more strictly lately, and loose ice in coolers is now becoming a quick way to get flagged at security.
If security opens your bag and sees ice cubes floating around your drinks or a slushy pool of melted ice water, you may be told you can’t bring it into the park. In some cases, guests have had to dump the ice out completely before being allowed through.

The frustrating part is that Disney still allows coolers. Guests can bring food, snacks, and drinks, as long as everything fits within the size limits. So naturally, many people assume ice would fall into the “normal cooler stuff” category. But Disney clearly views loose ice as messy and inconvenient, especially during busy entry times when security is trying to move crowds through quickly.
Here’s the good news: you can still keep your drinks cold, you just have to pack differently.
Reusable ice packs are allowed, and they’re honestly the easiest solution. They keep your cooler cold without turning it into a dripping mess by lunchtime. Many guests are also freezing bottled water overnight, which works like a built-in ice pack while staying completely acceptable at security.
And there’s one little loophole that guests have been using more often: cups.

Disney may not allow loose ice inside coolers, but guests can still bring reusable tumblers or cups filled with ice into the parks. That means you can start the day with an insulated cup packed with ice and refill it with water throughout the day without dealing with security issues.
At the end of the day, this is one of those Disney rules that can ruin your morning if you don’t know about it ahead of time. If you’re packing a cooler, skip the loose ice, use ice packs, and save yourself the headache before your vacation even begins.
