New Bombshell Reveals Extent of JK Rowling’s Role in ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot

HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has generated steady conversation since it was announced in 2023. The network has committed to adapting all seven books across multiple seasons, positioning the show as a faithful, long-form retelling of the original novels.

The reboot arrives more than a decade after the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011), concluded the original cinematic run. For Warner Bros. Discovery, the series represents both a creative reset and a major investment in one of its most valuable IPs.

At the same time, discussion around the project has frequently extended beyond casting and production timelines. Much of the scrutiny stems from J.K. Rowling’s public comments about gender identity and transgender rights, which have drawn criticism from fans and advocacy groups.

Emma Watson, who portrayed Hermione Granger in the original films, addressed the issue on a podcast last year. “There’s just no world in which I could ever cancel her out, or cancel that out, for anything,” Watson said, adding that “trans people are who they say they are.”

Rowling later responded in a rant on X, formerly Twitter, continuing a debate that has shaped how some viewers approach the reboot. Critics argue that reviving the franchise further benefits the author financially.

HBO executives have sought to separate the series from Rowling’s personal politics. Casey Bloys, the company’s chief content officer, addressed the matter on The Town podcast in 2025.

“Those are her personal, political views,” Bloys said. “She’s entitled to them. ‘Harry Potter’ is not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.”

New comments from cast member John Lithgow add further context to Rowling’s involvement. Lithgow, who will portray Albus Dumbledore in the series, spoke about the project at the 55th International Film Festival Rotterdam.

“I’ve never met her,” Lithgow said (via The Hollywood Reporter). “She’s not really involved in this production at all. The people who are re-adapting Harry Potter and turning it into an eight-year-long TV series are remarkable. … These are people I really want to work with.”

Lithgow also spoke about the appeal of the source material. “J.K. Rowling has created this amazing canon for young people, young kids’ literature that has jumped into the consciousness of society,” he said.

“Young and old people love Harry Potter and the Harry Potter stories. It’s so much about acceptance. It’s about good versus evil. It’s about kindness versus cruelty. It’s deeply felt.”

He added that he finds it “ironic and somewhat inexplicable that Rowling has expressed such views,” given the themes of the books.

Rowling remains formally attached to the series as an executive producer. In November 2025, she visited the Harry Potter set at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, according to Deadline.

Earlier that year, she wrote on X that she had read scripts for the first two episodes. “They are SO, SO, SO GOOD,” she posted.

When asked whether she was writing the show, Rowling clarified that she is not directly involved in scripting. She said she has “worked closely with the extremely talented writers.”

Bloomberg previously reported that Rowling would collaborate with the team to ensure the adaptation remains accurate to the original storyline. Based on public comments from both HBO and Lithgow, her role appears advisory rather than hands-on.

Production on the series is underway. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
