Disney’s ‘Everest’ Coaster Goes Under Surprise Construction

Expedition Everest isn’t the newest ride at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, but it might be the most dependable. It’s intense, immersive, and unapologetically physical—something that feels increasingly rare in modern theme park design.

That’s why recent refurbishment activity hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Scrims have gone up around parts of the load and unload station, signaling active work. But what hasn’t happened is just as important: the ride hasn’t closed. Guests are still boarding normally, and the experience remains unchanged.

That detail suggests this refurbishment isn’t about reimagining Everest or fixing a major problem. Instead, it looks like Disney is strengthening the foundation of one of the park’s most important attractions at exactly the right time.

Animal Kingdom is in a period of transition. As certain attractions leave the park for good, guest traffic doesn’t vanish—it shifts. Expedition Everest is positioned to absorb more of that demand, especially from guests looking for a true thrill ride without relying on Lightning Lane availability.

That increased usage adds stress, particularly in high-traffic areas like the station. Roofs, supports, and backstage systems take a beating over time, even when everything appears to be running smoothly.

This kind of refurbishment is Disney playing the long game.

Rather than waiting for structural issues to force an unexpected closure, the company is addressing potential weak points now—quietly and efficiently. It’s the sort of work most guests never think about, but it’s what keeps a ride like Everest reliable year after year.

There’s also a bigger message here. Disney doesn’t invest in attractions it plans to phase out. This type of maintenance signals confidence. Everest isn’t being sidelined as Animal Kingdom evolves—it’s being reinforced.

For guests, that means business as usual. You’ll still board the train, climb the mountain, and brace for the drop into darkness. The magic stays intact, even as real-world maintenance happens just out of sight.

In a park full of change, Expedition Everest remains a constant—and Disney is clearly committed to keeping it that way.
