Next ‘Batman’ Movie Reboot Not Part of James Gunn’s New DC Universe

Batman fans have multiple projects to look forward to, but not all of them are part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s newly established DC Universe.

Per Variety, Batman: Knightfall Part 1, slated for 2026, is the next animated adaptation of the legendary comic book saga and will remain separate from the Gunn/DCU continuity.

This multi-part series promises to showcase the iconic comic book story of Bane breaking Batman’s back and the ensuing chaos in Gotham, giving fans a classic tale outside the interconnected live-action universe.

Directed by Jeff Wamester, known for his work on DC’s animated Tomorrowverse projects, including the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy, Knightfall — Part 1 will focus on Batman’s struggle after Bane frees the entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum.

The story also highlights Azrael stepping into Batman’s shoes as Bruce Wayne recovers from his injuries, a key component of the original comics.

By adapting this tale in animated form, DC is providing fans a chance to experience one of Batman’s most iconic arcs in a self-contained format, distinct from the ongoing live-action continuity.

While Reeves’ The Batman – Part II starring Robert Pattinson is now scheduled for 2027 following a number of delays, Knightfall gives audiences something to look forward to in the interim.

Other Batman-related projects such as the DCU reboot The Brave and the Bold, the video game “LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight”, and the second novel from John Jackson Miller, “Batman: Revolution”, demonstrate DC’s multi-platform approach and wider plans for the foreseeable future.

The official synopsis for Knightfall — Part 1 reads: “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.” Fans can expect high-stakes action and a focus on Gotham’s villains rather than connections to other DCU films.

Batman: Knightfall — Part 1 will release in 2026, though an exact date is yet to be confirmed.
