Disney Changing the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, but Says the Gender-Inclusivity Isn’t Going Anywhere
The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is one of the most magical destinations for children at the Disney parks, offering an unforgettable experience where young guests can transform into Disney princesses, knights, or even characters from Encanto (2021). However, recent updates have reignited controversy about the salon among Disney Parks fans. However, with changes on the way for the makeover experience, one thing won’t be changing: the boutique’s gender-inclusive policies.
The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is a must-visit for many families traveling to Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. Children ages three to twelve are treated to a magical makeover, with various packages that include everything from a simple pink t-shirt to luxurious princess gowns. But things are about to change.
In September, both Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort announced that they would be revamping the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique experience, with changes set to roll out in October. The overhaul will streamline the booking process by introducing simplified packages. Additionally, Disney revealed that the Fairy Godmother herself will be making special visits during the makeover experience.
However, the gender-inclusive Disney cast member policies, which have been a topic of discussion for some time, will remain unchanged. In 2022, Disney began allowing cast members of all genders to work at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, replacing the previous “Fairy Godmothers in Training” with “Fairy Godmother’s Apprentices,” who can now choose costumes that best match their personal gender expression. This change was also implemented across Disney Cruise Line, where cast members of all genders help transform young guests into royalty.
This shift toward gender inclusivity has been met with a mixed response from Disney Parks fans. In response to recent reporting about the closure of the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique Disney PhotoPass studio at Magic Kingdom Park, many commenters expressed their continued dismay with the inclusive makeover experience.
“Maybe it closed due to a mother who paid a lot for her daughter, only to get a gender princess with a mustache,” said one upset fan.
“I’m gay, and I think CMs in drag is a step too far!” another commented. “Don’t throw that into children’s faces who won’t understand it, and potentially get freaked out. Leave the experience to women!”
On the other hand, many Disney Parks fans have expressed their support for the inclusive changes.
“How is being accepting of everyone alienating anyone?” one commenter asked. “If other being accepted makes you feel alienated then that’s a you problem. The only people who are being ‘alienated’ are those who feel that they are superior to anyone who is different than them.”
“People are getting mad over something that doesn’t affect them in the least!” said another. “The change is ONLY for the cast members that work at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, not for the children since they can be either pirates or princesses. It won’t affect you, and it won’t affect your child.”
Despite the controversy surrounding the boutique’s gender-inclusive changes, Disney has made it clear that these updates are here to stay. After the October update, the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique cast members will continue to be known as “Fairy Godmother’s Apprentices.”
