Another Minions Ride? Yes, Universal Is at It Again

Universal Studios isn’t slowing down on Minions anytime soon. In fact, the animated troublemakers are about to take over even more theme park real estate, as construction hints at yet another attraction dedicated to the Despicable Me franchise.

Universal’s Minion Obsession Continues

The rise of the Minions has been nothing short of a global phenomenon. What started as sidekick comic relief in 2010’s Despicable Me has ballooned into a cultural force, complete with spinoff films, viral internet memes, and a staggering amount of merchandise. Universal has fully capitalized on their popularity, weaving them into nearly all of its theme parks worldwide.

At Universal Orlando Resort, Minion Land is one of the newest additions to Universal Studios Florida, featuring attractions like Despicable Me Minion Mayhem and Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast. Meanwhile, Universal Studios Hollywood is complete with its own Minion-centric area with similar experiences, plus a dedicated outdoor play zone for younger fans.

Overseas, Minion Land is a staple at Universal Studios Beijing and Singapore, while Japan’s Minion Park—home to yet another iteration of Despicable Me Minion Mayhem—remains a fan favorite.

A New Villain-Con Minion Blast in the Works?

Now, it looks like Universal Studios Japan is gearing up to expand Minion Park even further.

Recent photos shared by X (formerly Twitter) user @MORy_moryusj show construction walls with the unmistakable Villain-Con “V” symbol behind them, suggesting that the park is building its own version of the Villain-Con Minion Blast attraction that opened in Orlando in 2023.

Wha…what is this!!
Could it be ” V” ” from VILLAIN-CON?

While Minions may be an easy win for Universal, Villain-Con Minion Blast hasn’t exactly been a home run with fans. The Orlando version, which replaced Shrek 4-D, was met with mixed reactions. Many guests were underwhelmed by its reliance on screens, a common complaint about some of Universal’s newer attractions.

Unlike traditional dark rides, Villain-Con Minion Blast is a stand-through shooting game that trades physical set pieces for digital environments, leaving some visitors unimpressed by the lack of immersion.

Universal Studios Japan has yet to confirm the addition, but the signs are there—literally. If the Osaka-based park is indeed getting its own Villain-Con Minion Blast, it remains to be seen whether Universal will tweak the experience based on feedback from its Orlando counterpart. Either way, the Minions aren’t going anywhere, and Universal seems more than happy to keep them front and center in its theme park lineup.
