Disney Shocks Fans with the Announcement of a ‘Coco’ Sequel!
In 2017, Coco captured hearts across the globe with its poignant storytelling and stunning animation, earning it a permanent place in the minds of Disney and Pixar fans. The film follows the journey of young Miguel, a boy from a family that forbids music due to a long-standing family curse, as he ventures into the Land of the Dead to uncover the secrets of his heritage.
It was a tale of family, tradition, and discovering one’s true identity, all set against the backdrop of Día de los Muertos.

Now, after years of speculation and growing excitement among fans, Disney has officially confirmed that a Coco sequel is in the works and is expected to be released sometime in 2029.
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure,” said Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, during the 2025 Annual Shareholders Meeting. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.”
For those who have been eagerly waiting for more from the Coco universe, this news comes as a welcome surprise. The original film was both a critical and commercial success, grossing over $800 million worldwide.
With its mesmerizing visuals, captivating score, and deep emotional resonance, Coco earned multiple awards, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, further cementing its place in Disney’s legacy.
The sequel, titled Coco 2 for now, promises to bring the same level of depth and heart to audiences, although details on the story remain under wraps for now. However, the team behind the original film is returning to ensure that the magic continues. Director Lee Unkrich, known for his work on Coco and Toy Story 3 (2010), along with co-director Adrian Molina, will be back at the helm.
In addition, Oscar®-winning producer Mark Nielsen, who worked on Toy Story 4 (2019) and Inside Out 2 (2024), will once again be producing the film.
Fans can expect Coco 2 to maintain the essence of the original while introducing new characters and expanding on the already rich world of the Land of the Dead. While there’s no official plot released yet, the possibilities for Miguel and his family to explore more about the mystical world are endless.
If you’re wondering what else to look forward to in the Coco franchise, Disney has also revealed a series of exciting park developments. The Coco characters are making appearances in a brand-new parade at Magic Kingdom, and the Coco experience has officially taken over the EPCOT Mexico Pavilion at Walt Disney World, adding more ways for fans to connect with the story.
Though Coco 2 is still in the early stages of production, we can expect more updates in the near future. Disney Dining will be following every development closely, so stay tuned for the latest news on the return of Miguel, Hector, and the rest of the beloved Coco characters.
