Massive Earthquake Strikes Disney Park as Guests Shelter in Place

The new year got off to a terrifying start for residents in Tokyo, Japan. On the afternoon of January 1, a powerful earthquake rocked the area, destroying homes, splitting roads, and knocking out the power for tens of thousands of people. measured 7.5 on the Richter scale , making it the largest earthquake ever felt in the area.

The earthquake shocked millions of the city’s residents, as well as guests visiting the popular Tokyo Disneyland Resort . After the quake, all rides and attractions immediately shut down for safety reasons. Cast members will not only have to go through all the attractions and make sure that no damage has been done, but the area also has to prepare for violent aftershocks. The aftershocks have the potential to be as powerful as the original quake.

Unfortunately, when an earthquake hits Japan, residents are not only at risk of more damage because of aftershocks, but powerful earthquakes typically trigger tsunami warnings. A tsunami is a giant wave that is caused by a major earthquake or volcanic eruption under the sea. Tsunamis can cause even more damage than the earthquake itself, especially when there is a lot of flooding.

Shortly after the earthquake, multiple videos were shared of guests being forced to shelter in place as the ground shook beneath them.

We are gradually returning to normal business. It was the first time I had experienced an earthquake of this magnitude in a park, so I was surprised, but the cast members responded and I wasn’t scared.

Guests weren’t the only ones who had to shelter in place, X user @muu_7dona6 shared a video of Donald Duck sheltering, and reminding other guests to stay down and cover their heads.

At this time, it does not look like Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea have sustained any significant damage. According to the resort’s website, the parks are scheduled to open on time and resume regular operating hours.

However, if you are headed to the Tokyo Disney Parks , it is important to be alert and aware. Aftershocks could continue for months, so always listen to cast members and do as instructed should an aftershock hit.
