Police Investigate Charred Body Found Near Disney Park, Case Begins

An update has been issued by police following the discovery of a burnt body near a Disney theme park in Hong Kong.

The body was found under a tree at the Inspiration Lake Recreation Centre, located on Lantau Island. The discovery was made by a couple over the weekend, and employees nearby alerted authorities at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

According to the latest reports, police have cautiously identified the deceased, and the suspected cause of death has been revealed.

The body, which displayed “obvious burn marks” on its upper half, was found alongside a lighter. The Serious Crime Unit of the New Territories South Region has taken over the investigation, and authorities believe the body belongs to a 31-year-old man from Mainland China.

Police have stated, “Personnel have conducted in-depth investigations, reviewed CCTV footage in various areas and questioned businesses and shops. We have preliminarily identified the deceased as a 31-year-old man from the mainland. Police are currently investigating the case as a suicide and are actively contacting the deceased’s relatives and friends to gather more details.”

An area around Hong Kong Disneyland, which is located just 1 kilometer from the lake, was cordoned off as investigators combed the scene on Monday. Inspiration Lake, which is managed by Hong Kong International Theme Parks, Limited (HKITP), was closed temporarily as authorities continued their work but is now set to reopen on Wednesday (January 29, 2025).

Inspiration Lake, known for its scenic mountain views, picnic areas, and boat rentals, typically offers free admission. The recreation center has now suspended operations until further notice.

Hong Kong Disneyland, located just 0.6 miles away, has yet to comment on the incident. The park, which has struggled with profitability in the past, has invested heavily in new attractions in recent years, including the upcoming Spider-Man attraction and the World of Frozen area.
