11 Of The Coolest Things To Try On Your Next Trip To Walt Disney World

One of the things I love about Walt Disney World is its “re-visit-ability.”  I think you could go every month and still find something new & different to do.  With my trips multiple times per year to keep up to date on what is going on (& for fun too) I don’t have any trouble finding a cool new activity to do during my trip.  Here are 11 you should trip on your next Walt Disney World vacation:

11. Catch a wave dude!

What is cooler than surfing on vacation?  Did you know that you can take group or private surf lessons at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park?  You can sign up for a pre-park opening lesson for 3-4 hours with a group of up to 12 other surfers, or sign up for a private session of 100 waves.  This is a pretty cool option if you ask me, and definitely on my bucket list (see, something I haven’t tried yet).  Surfers must be 8 years old or older and you need to call 407-WDW-PLAY to find out available dates, pricing & to make your reservation.  In the immortal words of Crush, “Grab Shell DUDE!”

10. Trader Sam’s

There are few lounges in the world as cool as Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at the Polynesian Village Resort.  Plan to spend some time here grabbing some drinks and grub before heading over to a park for evening entertainment, or cap off your night.  The themed drinks and souvenir glasses are a lot of fun, not to mention all of the cool effects in the room itself.  Trader Sam’s is really a combination of an attraction and a bar.  Add it to your must do list.

9. Go to a dessert party

Many of the nighttime spectaculars offer an option to attend with VIP seating after enjoying a dessert party.  There is nothing cooler than feeling like a VIP as you are escorted to a reserved, prime viewing spot for fireworks . . .unless it is the delicious themed desserts and drinks you enjoy before the show.  Currently Magic Kingdom has options for the Happily Ever After Fireworks, Epcot has a Frozen Ever After Dessert party that not only gives you VIP Illuminations viewing but a ride on Frozen Ever After with no wait, and at Hollywood Studios you can enjoy Star Wars themed treats and a great viewing spot for the Galactic Spectacular Show.  You want to make advance reservations for any of these experiences online or by calling 407-WDW-DINE.

8. Dine with an Imagineer

To date this is one of the coolest, most amazing experiences I’ve had at Walt Disney World.  There are a couple of restaurant options currently offered for this experience, but I did the one at Hollywood Brown Derby in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  You are part of a small group that has a private room and an Imagineer all to yourself.  We enjoyed a delicious multi-course meal while we chatted with and asked questions of our Imagineer . . .all kinds of great stories about Walt Disney World and design and history.  Again, you want to reserve this in advance as it only occurs a few times a week and has very limited seating. 407-WDW-DINE

7. Attend an After Hours Party

Even though it is an added ticket price, the two after hours holiday parties offered at the Magic Kingdom are so much fun & so worth attending.  If you are there in the Fall (or late summer into Fall) see if there is a Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party during your vacation . . . chances are strong.  This party has the most amazing parade I have ever seen—worth the price of admission on its own.  Add to that the unique character experiences, trick or treating, getting to wear a costume—makes it a very cool experience.  Over the holiday season you can attend a Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.  This party gives me all the feels with another great parade, amazing fireworks, characters in their holiday finery and even some snow in the air.

6. Ride in a Balloon

Another item still on my bucket list is the beautiful Aerophile balloon at Disney Springs.  This tethered hot air balloon takes you high in the air for a birds eye view of Walt Disney World resort.  Definitely a thrilling and very cool experience.  You can purchase tickets at the balloon, but note that weather conditions can keep it grounded.

5. Signature Dining

With many fine dining options, Walt Disney World is a foodie’s dream.  Each trip I try to experience something new in dining although my favorites keep calling me back.  On your next trip try a new signature dining option, stretch your comfort zone a little bit and try one of the house specialties—you may just find a new favorite.  Whether it is California Grill or Jiko, dining at a signature restaurant is a very cool addition to your vacation.

4. Take a tour

One of my favorite things to do: Behind the Scenes tours. It is so cool to see how things work at Walt Disney World, get the inside scoop, or just learn the history and symbolism of an attraction or area of the park. Almost every park has an experience with behind the scenes components, and some go to multiple parks.  You can find the options listed on Disneyworld.com and you can contact 407-WDW-TOUR for reservations.  If you don’t want to see any of the backstage areas, it is super cool to have a VIP guide for the day—who doesn’t want to feel like a celebrity?  That would be an amazing add to your theme park day.

3. The Kitchen Sink

Looking for a challenge?  Visit the Beach Club’s Beaches & Cream restaurant with your closest friends and order up the Kitchen Sink Sundae.  A little bit of everything from the ice cream side of the restaurant served up in an actual sink.  This is a cool (& very sweet) challenge to take on.  You will want to try to get a reservation for Beaches & Cream to make sure you can get your ice cream.

2. Try a new activity

Walt Disney World has a lot of recreational activities that you may not even know are there.  One trip I marked off an item from my Disney bucket list by going horseback riding through Fort Wilderness Campground.  We’ve done some fishing excursions in both Bay Lake and Crescent Lake.  And we’ve even taken an archery lesson at Fort Wilderness.  It is a lot of fun to take a “break” day from the parks to slow down a little bit, get outdoors and do something cool like these activities.  Just sign up in advance so you don’t miss out on the fun!

1. Sammy Duvall’s Watersports Centre

One of the coolest things to do at Walt Disney World is found at the marina of the Contemporary Resort:  Sammy Duvall’s Watersports Centre.  Not only can you rent boats here you can go parasailing, rent a jet ski, and go water skiing, wakeboarding or tubing.  You can get many more thrills than these activities—even on the roller coasters in the parks.  Again, take a break day from the parks and enjoy these exciting activities out on the water.  You should contact the Centre at 407-939-7529 for availability, pricing and reservations before you visit.
