If you haven’t heard already, Hurricane Irma is headed straight for Florida from the Caribbean area.  The governor of Florida declared a state of emergency for the state in order to ensure that the state can prepare for the major storm.  Hurricane Irma is expected to be the largest hurricane in history, making the risk and impact to the Florida area very real.  Walt Disney World is already starting to react by enforcing closures around the entire property to ensure that guests aren’t out and about during the worst part of the storm.

Here are the list of impacted closures and changes at Walt Disney World as of 7 PM CST on Thursday, September 7th:

  • Disney’s Blizzard Beach:  The water park will be closed Friday, September 8th and Saturday, September 9th. (Note:  Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon will be open.)
  • Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground:  The entire resort will be closed starting Saturday, September 9th at 2 PM.  It is expected to remain closed through at least Monday, September 11th and possibly longer.
    • Dining events at the resort like Mickey’s Backyard BBQ, Hoop Dee Doo Revue and Trail’s End Restaurant will also be closed during this time.
  • Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party:  The party is cancelled for Sunday, September 10th.  Guests with tickets for the event on September 10th can exchange for a variety of options:
    • Refund for the price of the tickets
    • Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party tickets (different evening)
    • Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party tickets
    • 1 day Magic Your Way Park Hopper tickets
  • Night of Joy:  The concert event for Saturday, September 9th has been cancelled.  Currently the concert event for Friday, September 8th will be performed as planned.  Guest with tickets for the event on September 9th have a couple options to exchange them:
    • Refund for the price of the tickets
    • Events for the September 8th event
  • Epcot Food & Wine Festival Events:  Some of the special festival events have been cancelled.
    • What’s Cooking With… has been cancelled for September 10th.  This was the event with Alex Guarnaschelli.
    • Mix It, Make It, Celebrate It! has been cancelled for Monday, September 11th and Tuesday, September 12th.

Also note that Orlando International Airport will also halt all flights starting on Saturday, September 9th.  The airport is expected to completely close at 5 PM.  The Sanford airport will also completely close at 5:15 PM.  No re-opening dates for either airport have been communicated yet.

It is unknown yet when and if the theme parks will close, but be sure to pay attention to regular updates if you will be at Walt Disney World during Hurricane Irma.

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
