Dollywood Confirms Shocking Closure as Dolly Parton Shares Health Update
What This Means for the Future of This Ride
Dollywood’s newest attraction is going dark again almost as quickly as it opened. NightFlight Expedition at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, will remain temporarily closed through Sunday, August 30, extending a period of restricted access for guests hoping to experience the park’s major new ride.
The park says the downtime is part of “ongoing ride rehearsal,” with additional work requested by the ride manufacturer. For weekend visitors, the result is simple: NightFlight Expedition will not be available.

Dollywood Extends NightFlight Expedition Closure Through August 30
Dollywood confirmed that the attraction will remain closed through August 30 while work continues on its ride system. According to the park’s statement, the manufacturer “has asked for additional time to adjust the timing of the ride’s turntable to ensure a quality experience for this unique part of the attraction.”
The park has also said another update is expected later this week. That wording matters because August 30 is the end of the currently announced closure period, not a confirmed reopening date. Guests visiting immediately afterward should not assume the ride will reopen on August 31 until Dollywood says so.
Inside the Magic has previously followed NightFlight Expedition’s shifting opening timeline, including the move away from its earlier spring target, as well as Dollywood’s official August 19 public opening announcement.

NightFlight Expedition Had Just Opened to Dollywood Guests
The timing makes this closure especially noticeable. Dollywood’s ticketing materials listed August 19 as the beginning of general-public rides, meaning the attraction had only just entered regular guest operation before this latest interruption.
Dollywood’s official attraction page describes an indoor experience combining four types of adventure: soaring over the Smokies, climbing a mountainside, plunging into whitewater rapids, and navigating a mysterious lake.
When Dollywood announced NightFlight Expedition in September 2025, it said the project represented more than $50 million and was the largest attraction investment in Dollywood Parks & Resorts history at that time. The custom amphibious ride system was developed with Herschend Creative Studios and Mack Rides, combining ride movement with projections, audio, lighting, water, and coaster elements.
Dollywood has not publicly provided a detailed technical diagnosis beyond the turntable timing work, so the closure should be characterized only as the temporary interruption the park has announced.

Weekend Guests Lose Access to Dollywood’s Biggest New Ride
For guests arriving in Pigeon Forge this weekend, the newest ride at Dollywood is off the itinerary. Visitors who booked a late-August trip specifically to experience NightFlight Expedition will have to wait for a future opportunity.
The closure applies to NightFlight Expedition, not Dollywood as a whole. Nothing in the park’s announcement indicates a broader shutdown, and the resort continues to promote its wider lineup of rides, entertainment, dining, and seasonal offerings.
Inside the Magic has also covered other recent Dollywood operating interruptions, including maintenance downtime for the Dollywood Express, while a broader look at Dollywood’s 2026 operating calendar shows how late-summer visits lead into the park’s fall and holiday seasons.

Dolly Parton’s Health Scare Adds Another Concern for Fans
The attraction update also lands shortly after Dolly Parton missed NightFlight Expedition’s August 14 dedication in person. Dollywood’s official dedication announcement said Parton participated by video after her doctor advised her not to travel because she had been experiencing dizziness related to dehydration.
Parton has since spoken publicly about her health. In a recent People interview, she discussed health issues that she said she had not sufficiently addressed while caring for her late husband, Carl Dean, and indicated that she remains at work while recovering.
The ride closure and Parton’s health are separate developments; there is no evidence that her condition is connected to NightFlight Expedition’s operational issues. Their overlap nevertheless makes this an unusually complicated opening period.
Inside the Magic has previously tracked Parton’s recent health-related schedule changes, adding context to why her absence from the dedication drew attention.

What Happens Next for NightFlight Expedition
The next meaningful information should come from Dollywood itself, making the promised update especially important for guests planning late-August and early-September visits. The park has promised another update later this week, and that announcement may clarify whether NightFlight Expedition can resume operation after August 30 or whether additional rehearsal time will be necessary.
Until then, guests with upcoming visits should treat the ride as unavailable through Sunday and check Dollywood’s official NightFlight Expedition page and official park channels before traveling specifically for the attraction.
NightFlight Expedition remains listed by Dollywood as a new, open attraction, but its immediate operating schedule is restricted. The key distinction for guests is that the closure is temporary, while the reopening date remains unconfirmed. Dollywood’s next update will determine whether this weekend is simply a short interruption—or whether the new ride needs more time before regular operation can settle in.
