A small but cherished corner of the Mexico Pavilion at EPCOT is closing for good at the end of the month, as Walt Disney World Resort begins liquidating one of the World Showcase’s most distinctive shopping stands.
Oaxacan Wood-Carving Shop Set to Close
WDWNT reported on August 25 that the Oaxacan wood-carving stand in the Plaza de los Amigos, located inside the pyramid in the Mexico World Showcase Pavilion at EPCOT, has begun selling off its remaining inventory. Photos shared by the outlet show signage announcing the entire shop is now 50% off.
The stand has long stood out among the offerings in the EPCOT World Showcase, selling statues hand-carved from wood sourced in Mexico’s Oaxacan Valley. Artisans traditionally use pocketknives and machetes to shape the wood before sanding and hand-painting each piece — a labor-intensive process reflected in the craftsmanship of every item sold there.
When the Stand Will Shut Down
A Disney cast member told WDWNT that the shop is expected to officially close on Monday, August 31, 2026. The closure appears limited to this single stand — the other shops inside the pyramid, along with the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros attraction and the San Angel Inn Restaurante Table-Service restaurant, are expected to keep operating as usual.
What Comes Next Is Unclear
Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t revealed what, if anything, will take the wood-carving stand’s place. Given that the shop occupies just a few tables near the pyramid’s entrance and exit, it’s possible Disney could simply leave the space open to ease foot traffic through that part of the Mexico World Showcase Pavilion. The reasoning behind the closure also hasn’t been disclosed.
