Walt Disney World Rumored to Add Bluetooth Functionality to MagicBands

Credit: Disney

We have seen rumors circulating the internet today that it is possible that an interesting update is planned for MagicBands.  The rumor is that in the very near future, Disney will be adding to Bluetooth functionality to the MagicBands.  This functionality would mean that guests wouldn’t have to touch their MagicBand directly to the Mickey head for various MagicBand uses.  This action is what many cast members will refer to as “Mickey to Mickey” since guests have the Mickey on their MagicBand touch the Mickey head on their guest room doors, park entry, FastPass+, etc.  It is rumored that Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort will be the first to adopt the Bluetooth functionality.  This would mean that guests wouldn’t have to actually touch their MagicBand to the door at these resorts and they would be able to open the door once their MagicBand got in range.

This is currently the only test that is rumored.  There is no word yet as to whether park entry, FastPass+, Dining Plan, merchandise, etc. will also start to adopt this new functionality.  Of course, none of this has been confirmed directly by Disney, so this could all end up being just another rumor.

What would you all think if this rumor were to be true?  Who thinks this functionality would make things easier and save time?

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
