This past week was National Pollinator Work! Even at Walt Disney World Resort, pollinators are celebrated. Pollinators are bees, butterflies, etc. who help move pollen from one part of the flower to another in order to help the plant produce fruit or seeds. This is an important job within the environment so we have to give these tiny helpers a celebration for all that they do. These pollinators help fruits, vegetables and other plants grown. More than 75 percent of the crops for the entire world rely on pollinators to do their job. Unfortunately, these important creatures are experiencing habitat loss, which is causing a global decline in their numbers.
At Walt Disney World Resort there are pollinator-friendly gardens that surround the new 270-acre, 50 megawatt solar facility that was put in place. The addition of the solar facility also reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50,000 tons per year! Two-thirds of the facility is pollinator-friendly to provide a habitat for the pollinators right within Walt Disney World Resort.
Disney has a team of experts part of the Disney Environmental and Horticulture team who check the area and observe how attracted they are to the area. So far the team has spotted over 50 pollinators.
Check out this great video from Disney Parks Blog, featuring Conservation Program Manager Rachel Smith to see what she and other members of Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment team are doing to help pollinators at the Walt Disney World solar facility:
How cool is that?
