Updated Closings at Walt Disney World Due to Hurricane Matthew

As we previously reported, hurricane Matthew is heading for Florida with expected impacts to the Central Florida area, including Walt Disney World. ¬†Winds are expected to reach as high as 75+ MPH with 5 to 10 inches of rainfall. ¬†The storm is expected to hit tonight and continue through the evening and into the morning. ¬†Walt Disney World is responding quickly to put guest safety first as the popular vacation destination weathers this storm. ¬†Cast members have begun bringing in all items not bolted down so that they won’t fly around in the storm, or doing tie-downs for items that will stay outside at the resorts and the parks. ¬†Disney is also providing guests with knowledge about how to protect themselves and procedures to get to safety around the resort.

We previously reported that guests are being relocated from Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. There have been additional updates and closures reported for various attractions on property:

  • Blizzard Beach closed 10/6 and 10/7
  • Typhoon Lagoon closed 10/6 and 10/7
  • Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party cancelled for 10/6
  • All of Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground closed through Sunday, including Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue and Mickey’s Backyard BBQ.
  • Characters in Flight closed through Sunday
  • Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show closed 10/6 and 10/7

There have been no changes to the major theme park hours yet.  There is a high likelihood that hours will be shortened for tonight and either delayed or completely cancelled for 10/7.  When hurricane Wilma came through in 2005, the parks were closed for a few hours the following morning in an effort to clean and get the park ready for guests.  The extent of any damage will determine how quickly the parks will open for guests on Friday, 10/7.

To all in the area, please be safe and our thoughts are with you.  We will keep you posted as we learn more about operating schedules and impacts from hurricane Matthew.

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
