Universal Resort Confirms No Daily Fireworks Show Routine

Universal Destinations & Experiences, the theme park division of Comcast, is embarking on a monumental expansion, and for the first time, that growth is looking toward the United Kingdom. In a recently released letter dated June 25, 2025, Universal confirmed plans to bring a new entertainment resort to Bedfordshire, England.

The project aims to establish a “world-class theme park” surrounded by several themed lands, on-site accommodations, and a wide array of retail, dining, and entertainment offerings. Universal notes the development could generate nearly £50 billion in economic benefit and create 28,000 jobs—potentially positioning it as one of the largest employers in the region. Impressively, 80% of that workforce would come from nearby areas including Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes.

The news comes at a time of major growth for Universal. The opening of Universal’s Epic Universe in Orlando brought guests new lands inspired by Nintendo, How to Train Your Dragon, and Universal’s Classic Monsters. Meanwhile, work continues on the Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas, and horror fans can look forward to Universal Horror Unleashed in Las Vegas, with a sister experience now confirmed for Chicago, Illinois.

Back in the UK, Universal’s communications with the community reflect an early and ongoing dialogue. Thousands of residents participated in consultations throughout 2024, with a reported 92% showing support for the project. Environmental awareness was also emphasized in a letter to residents, stating that theme parks can create positive economic and ecological impacts while also expressing a dedication to enhancing the region’s natural beauty.

Originally hinted at in late 2023, the idea of a UK resort gained momentum when Comcast acquired land in Bedfordshire, as confirmed by Bedford Independent. The story echoed early coverage by Orlando Park Stop, which first identified the company’s growing international interests. At that time, Universal launched a project-specific website featuring aerial imagery and FAQs outlining the early stages of the plan.

While Universal hasn’t yet revealed the resort’s specific themes or intellectual properties, fan speculation has included everything from Paddington to James Bond, and from Lord of the Rings to Back to the Future. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding these rumored franchises.

The company has also taken steps to outline how entertainment offerings will align with community standards. New documentation reveals that no more than ten fireworks shows will be held each year, with events clustered around special celebrations such as Diwali, Chinese New Year, New Year’s Eve, and November 5th. Most nights will instead feature drone shows, with clearance requested for displays up to 50 meters high, operated exclusively over Universal-owned property.

Universal’s message to local stakeholders has been clear: the project is rooted in collaboration. In comments shared with Bedford Independent, the company stated, “We support Bedford’s vision of becoming a prosperous place to live, work, and visit,” reaffirming its interest in working closely with local councils and residents alike.

As this UK resort progresses, it will join a growing global family of Universal parks, including locations in Hollywood, Orlando, Beijing, Singapore, and Japan. In 2023 alone, Comcast revealed $271 million for acquisitions of new land for future development, underscoring its commitment to themed entertainment worldwide.

He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his… More »
