Universal Orlando Resort has spent decades making Express Pass one of the easiest upgrades for guests to understand. Buy the pass, enter a shorter line at participating attractions, and spend less of your vacation waiting.
Epic Universe is adding another option to that familiar formula.
Universal Express Now has been available for several months, giving guests a much more targeted way to pay for shorter waits. Instead of committing to a traditional Express Pass covering multiple participating attractions, guests can purchase one-time Express access for individual rides.
The alternative can cost considerably less upfront, but there’s an important catch. Express Now availability can change throughout the day, turning the Universal Orlando app into an increasingly important part of visiting Epic Universe.
Express Now Offers a Different Way to Skip Lines
Universal’s traditional Express products remain expensive, particularly during busier periods.
Regular Universal Express provides one-time Express access at participating attractions, while Express Unlimited allows guests to repeatedly use Express at participating rides. Depending on the date and park, prices can climb well into the hundreds of dollars per person.
Express Now approaches the same problem differently.
Guests can open the Universal Orlando app and purchase Express access for a specific participating attraction. Prices have recently been around $20 to $25 per person, although availability and pricing can vary.
For guests who only care about skipping one particularly painful standby line, that changes the equation considerably.
Rather than purchasing Express access across numerous attractions, someone could spend most of the day using standby lines and pay extra only when there’s a ride they don’t want to wait for.
That’s especially appealing at Epic Universe, where one attraction could have a manageable wait while another has a much longer line.
There’s One Major Catch
Express Now isn’t simply a list of rides that remains unchanged throughout the day.
The available attractions can rotate.
During one recent example, the Universal Orlando app offered Express Now for Yoshi’s Adventure, Fyre Drill, and Hiccup’s Wing Gliders.
After refreshing the app, the selection changed. Yoshi’s Adventure disappeared while Mine-Cart Madness became available.
That’s a significant difference.
Mine-Cart Madness can command some of the longer waits at Epic Universe, making the ability to purchase individual Express access particularly valuable when standby times climb.
It also means guests can’t necessarily build their entire day around buying Express Now for one attraction.
Just because you see a ride available at 11 a.m. doesn’t mean it’ll remain available at 1 p.m.
Epic Universe Guests Need a New Strategy
The rotating availability creates an unusual balancing act.
Guests could buy Express Now as soon as they see their favorite attraction. Doing so eliminates the risk of waiting and discovering that the option has disappeared.
But purchasing immediately isn’t always the best value.
If an attraction has a relatively short standby line, spending another $20 or $25 per person might not save enough time to justify the cost. A family of four could potentially spend around $80 to $100 just to bypass one line.
Waiting creates another possibility.
A guest could refresh the app later and discover that Express Now has appeared for an attraction with a much longer standby wait. In that situation, the same basic purchase suddenly looks far more valuable.
There’s simply no guarantee that will happen.
Express Now Doesn’t Completely Eliminate Traditional Express
Calling Express Now a replacement doesn’t mean Universal has eliminated its broader Express products.
Instead, Universal has introduced an alternative to the original all-or-nothing approach.
Previously, guests primarily had to decide whether paying for a traditional Express product made financial sense. Now, Epic Universe visitors can make that decision attraction by attraction.
That’s a potentially major change for families watching their vacation budgets.
A guest who doesn’t need Express access everywhere can skip the expensive full-day option and potentially purchase access only for the rides where standby waits become difficult to swallow.
The tradeoff is predictability.
Traditional Express provides guests with a much clearer idea of what they’ve purchased for the day. Express Now requires more attention, more app checking, and potentially some quick decisions.
Universal Is Giving Guests More Control
For years, Express Pass largely asked guests to make their decision before tackling the park: spend the extra money or rely on standby.
Express Now creates a middle ground.
Visitors can arrive at Epic Universe, watch wait times, experience attractions through standby, and decide later whether one particularly long line deserves an additional purchase.
After several months of operation, however, guests are learning that Express Now works best when they understand its limitations.
Attractions can appear and disappear. Availability isn’t guaranteed. Waiting too long could mean losing an Express option you wanted, while refreshing at the right moment could reveal something much better.
For Epic Universe visitors, skipping the line has become more flexible.
It’s also become a little more complicated.
